The shape of the swing that you make is generally determined based on a combination of a number of different factors, and these include but are not necessarily limited to your height, your build and how long your arms are. Provided that you are correctly coordinating the turning motion behind your upper body and the swinging motion of both of your arms, then the swing plane is going to be capable of taking care of itself.
Your Swing Plane and Swing Tempo
How fast or how slow you swing your club again is going to depend entirely on the individual person. For example, Lanny Wadkins is capable of swinging at a tempo that is very swift, but the most important is that the rhythm that he uses always remains constant from the beginning to the end. On the other hand of the spectrum you have somebody like Ben Crenshaw who swings in a relatively slow manner. What separates tour pros from the handicap golfers is their ability to maintain a rhythm of consistency. Fast or slow is actually completely irrelevant, all that matters is that your swing is in good time.
You need to find your own "best pace" at which you should be swinging the club, a tempo that is going to make it possible for you to keep in control of all of your movements.
1 - Naturally, how far you are standing from the ball is going to have an impact on your swinging plane. Long clubs like drivers are going to cause you to stand further away from the ball more naturally.
2 - This is going to cause you to have a fairly flat and much shallower swing plane.
3 - On the other hand, if you are playing using your 9 iron, then you are going to be working with a much shorter shaft, and this is going to require you to stand significantly closer to the ball while playing.
4 - From a position such as this one, you are going to have a swing that will naturally and automatically become steeper and it will become more upright as a result.
Understanding how your swing plane is going to be naturally impacted by how you are standing and what club you are using is something that you really need to grasp in order to have control over the consistently of your swing plane. Obviously, your stance can change based on the club that you are using. Remember that the ability to maintain a consistent rhythm is what separates the tour pro players from the handicap golfers.
