Woods Presents to Singh Trophy

Tiger Woods stood posed, along side him the trophy for the Chevron World Challenge. It was a sight that was all too familiar, but there was a twist. Tiger Woods was presenting the trophy to the contest winner Vijay Singh. Ever since the U.S. Open, Tiger Woods has not played a single hole of golf, all due in small part to a knee surgery that took him out of the final half year of the golf season. This provided a grand host of opportunity for those who would normally be placing in his shadow.

This victory was the first for Singh, with Woods having won the Chevron Challenge a year before. Singh also won two other cups that would have belonged to Tiger, the Bridgestone Invitational and FedEx Cups. Though it is easy to accredit his victories to Woods' absences, in truth Singh has been a rising star to the last few years, with three majors under his belt and taking number 1 away from Woods in 2004. He can easily be remembered as the second best player in the era of Tiger Woods. Some didn't make much use of the players absence, as Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Geoff Ogilvy and Adam Scott together got 1 victory out of 41 games in the past half year. Mickelson only made headlines because of something said the Tiger's caddy.

Five players truly made the best of Tiger's absence. Padraig Harrington, Anthony Kim, Camilo Villegas, Sergio Garcia and Boo Weekley. Harrington was voted player of the year by five organizations thanks to winning consecutive majors in the same season, only the seventh player to do so. Whether or not Tiger was playing, the honor earned by Harrington was one well deserved. Kim had his first victory by five shots at the Quail Hollow, with was followed by a two-shot victory at Congressional. These victories made Kim the fourth player to win multiple tourneys before the age of 25.

Villegas is number seven in the world, and was able to obtain two consecutive wins in the past season. Sergio Garcia came into the spotlight once Woods' shadow was lifted. He earned the honor of best player to never have won a major. He did win the Players Championship, bringing fame back to his name. Boo Weekley has the honor of getting to appear on the Tonight Show after only a single win. He is just within the top fifty world players, but his appeal is that he is a character in the world of golf. His outlook is simple, his humor has a country flavor, and over all Weekly fills the need for characters nicely.

When it comes to the question as to whom is benefiting the most from Woods' absence, the all star golfer focused his attention on the younger players, Kim, Villegas and Garcia. One can extend hope to these up and coming stars that they can hold their own when woods rejoins the game. They will have a challenge on their hands.
