There was a lot of speculation as to what might happen at the AT&T Nationals this weekend with so many different outstanding players hitting the links. Of course, the best way to describe the scene for the last round was hard charging to say the least. There were many different people out at the head of the pack, but it was hard to see the victory which finally got the title. This is because Nick Watney has been taken slightly less serious after a game destroying round at Whistling Straits cost him the title of the PGA Championship. What should have been in the bag going in with a three shot lead. Shooting an 81 on the final day sealed his fate.
He has learned from that experience and has been charging through the 2011 season. He has even won the World Golf Championship in March at Doral. This latest win has allowed Watney to rise from his rank of 15 to 10. This is something which many did not expect to see with players like K.J. Choi making their presence known.
Choi was making it difficult on Watney by playing superbly. He closed out Sunday with an outstanding score of 67, but it was not enough to create a situation in which he would be able to take the title home. Watney was able to win with a solid two shot victory in the end with a score of 66 on the final day.
Many were critical of the course to begin with. They felt that too many golfers were posting too great of scores. This is because there are many who were posting scores in the low 60s. Seven of the scores were 64 and under. Watney himself was able to post a record busting score of 62. This was a call to arms for many of the announcers saying that the course needed to be a little tougher.
Watney is looking at this victory as a way to maintain his charge back into being taken seriously as the great golfer that he is. He has surely learned a lot from his defeat and has focused on his game. There are many others who agree that he has improved not only on his gameplay, but on his ability to focus on what is ahead of him. With many top ten finishes last year and this year after his crushing loss, he is expected to keep winning titles at majors. His coach and other players agree that this can be his time to shine.
One of the runs to look at is his eight home run on the back nine in which he scored a 27. He had an eight hole run in which he landed an eagle and six birdies. This allowed the rest of the field to see that they were dealing with a player who was an unstoppable force. Even with the great showing from Choi, there was nothing that they could do to match his prowess.
