Van Pelt Beats Mallinger in a Sudden Death Battle at the US Bank

bovanpeltBo Van Pelt finally managed to take his first PGA tour event win, though he may never be given a chance to defend it. He managed to win against John Mallinger during the second playoff hole, allowing him to take the win in the U.S. Bank Championship on Sunday after the tournament went into a sudden death round for the first time in eight years, since 2001.

After a six year run, the U.S. Bank recently announced that they would not be renewing their sponsorship for this tournament despite the dramatic finish, meaning that if this tournament is going to return for a 43rd year in a row, and so Van Pelt can defend his championship title, a new sponsor is going to need to be found.

The PGA tour was built on tournaments like these that exist within the same town every year, one after another. There is a storied history behind this particular tournament. This is where Tiger Woods made his initial pro debut back in 1996, and also where a number of greats and legends have played but never won including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Sam Snead, Tom Watson and Trevino, as they have all played and taken second, but never taken first place. Will they be given a chance to?

This is actually the shortest event on the tour at only 6,759 yards, so in recent years many of the top name players have skipped it. Since the year 2007, this tournament has been opposite of the British Open, and as a result it does not draw many of the top name players anymore. One of the pros that decided to skip the British Open to show support for this tournament was Jerry Kelly, who took third place. He has been working with Steve Stricker in order to attempt saving the event, but no one is quite sure yet what is going to happen in order to lure a sponsor for this event.

If this was the last of this tournament, then at least the show was good between Van Pelt and Mallinger. On the second playoff hole, the 29 year old Mallinger rolled a second shot into a greenside bunker at No. 18. He got out, but he left himself 28 feet for a birdie, and he ended up pushing just right of the hole, forcing him to settle for par. At the same time, Van Pelt looked rather shaky at the 18 hole and managed to miss a eagle putt of 13 feet. He settled instead for tapping in a birdie, putting some pressure on Mallinger in the process, who managed to make a 5-footer while setting up for the final scramble.

Van Pelt certainly managed to redeem himself, however. He walked away with a $720,000 check and a gorgeous crystal trophy. Unfortunately, he may never be given the chance to defend his title if a new sponsor cannot be found before next year.
