Managing to solve Scotland for the first time, the USA team managed to win away with the 24th PGA Cup win following a record setting performance during the single match performances on Sunday, taking 8.5 out of 10 points away from Team GB&I in order to retail the much coveted Golf Trophy for the Llandudno International event.
For more than a year now, Brian Whitcomb had been taking notes about how he was going to go about his duties as the Captain of a PGA Cup Team. His duties involved be matching 10 different PGA cup professionals and they would be immersed in match play competition, facing some truly stomach churning realities regarding playing for one's entire country. Whitcomb, who was the PGA's honorary president from Bend in Oregon competed a short course through seeking out counsel from someone that he had watched turn the same role into a true success, the Ryder Cup Captain from 2008, Paul Azinger.
Whitcomb sat down with Azinger and took a lot of notes before he went on to guide the entire United States against Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) during the 24th PGA Cup which was held over the past week overseas in Scotland.
The Americans walked away with a resounding lead of 17 1/2 to 8 1/2 over Great Britain and Ireland, and this was a tribute to the depth and the talent of the United States as much as it was a tribute to the ability that Whitcomb had to bond as well as blend his players who represented 10 different sections from the PGA.
Whitcomb said that he told his players that he would take care of the pairings, the worrying as well as the second guessing, and that all they had to do was focus on the professional that they would be playing against. He told his players only to worry about their own business, and that is what everyone did. The United States picked up the bulk of their stride and momentum during the singles on Sunday, winning a record breaking eight out of ten matches, and halving an additional match at the Carrick located on Loch Lomond.
Sparked by Amber, PA's Mark Sheftic, who posted a 6 and a 5 victory over James Lee fro South Wales for the game's decisive point, the United States managed to go on to register more points in singles in the history of the PGA Cup as well as the second most total points ever since the tour's biennial showcase event began back in the year 1973 for the PGA Professionals.
So now the US is returning home holding the Llandudno International trophy, and they own a 16 – 5 – 3 overall record after having taken the PGA Cup win for the first time ever while on Scottish soil.
