One of the most flawless and brilliant games this weekend was played by Henrik Stenson in the Players Championship in Florida. It was one of the richest tournaments played at a whopping $12.6 million.
In the beginning of the day, Stenson was working with a five stroke shortfall behind the leader Alex Cejka before the stunning conclusion of the game.
In the last twelve holes, he staged one of the biggest comebacks in golf tournament history with six birdies and twelve under 276. The second place Ian Poulter with a 70 on eight under.
Henrik Stenson was ranked number nine in the world got $2.27 million for this stunning victory which was his second in the United States.
One of the biggest surprises on Sunday was Tiger Woods performance. All week long Tiger had been playing his usual miraculous game and then on Sunday, everything just disappeared on him. No matter what he did, the miracles just weren't there for him.
All of the credit for the win goes to Stenson for his flawless game. The man took a five shot shortfall and turned it into a four shot win. He ended the game with a bogey free 66 and surpassed every other player in the tournament.
Of course, Stenson is a tough player and was ranked ninth in the world and has now brought that up to fifth in the world after his beautiful win. And what was even more amazing is that he was not competing with Tiger Woods at the end of this tournament.
And the win impressed Tiger with the perfect game that was played by Stenson. It almost appeared as though he were playing on another course. But it was Sawgrass and the game simply looked effortless to those watching the events unfold.
Henrik Stenson first turned professional in 1999 and it only took one year for him to top the money rankings on the Challenge Tour in Europe. After joining the European Tour in 2001, he won six events. This is the same player who grabbed a great deal of media attention when he stripped down to his briefs during the first round of WGC-CA Championship.
The win this weekend was a first for Stenson and the jump in the world rankings is the second time he has held the fifth place position.
During the final rounds of the tournament, Stenson appeared to have none of the problems that some of the other players were facing. Tiger Woods was not even a factor in the tournament and Cejka suddenly developed an alarming habit of shooting to the left during the last rounds.
It was an odd day for the tournament and it didn't come out the way many had expected. However, a great player won the game after all, just maybe not the one that most people would have predicted. But that is why these tournaments can be exciting, if only for the stunning upsets and sometimes unusual events that take place. Congratulations Henrik Stenson, a well played and beautiful game.
