This week in golf featured the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, a notorious Major at a notorious location. This U.S. Open was the fifth at Pebble Beach, bringing plenty of history into the picture. The Pebble Beach U.S. Open featured the 72 win of Nicklaus and Tiger Wood’s massive win in 2000.
There were plenty of well-known players in the field, including Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, David Love III, Stuart Appleby, Tom Watson, Sergio Garcia, and Ian Poulter.
The course showed its strength in the first round, keeping most players well over 70. Shaun Michell and Brendon de Jonge were the surprising leaders after the first round, with both shooting a 69. Plenty of well-known players had difficult first rounds, including Padraig Harrington and Angel Cabrera. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson also struggled, as both failed to record a single birdie in their first round of play.
The second round found slightly better play, as popular players managed to make their way toward the leaderboard. Tiger Woods had a second round 72 after his firs t round 74 for a slight improvement. Ernie Els fired a 68 after a first round 73, launching himself toward the top of the leader board. Dustin Johnson had a first round 71 and a second round 70 to put himself into contention. Mickelson fired a second round 66, putting himself into serious contention. Some well known names who failed to make the cut included Geoff Ogilvy, Trevor Immelman, Rory McIlroy, Rory Sabatini, and Y.E. Yang.
The third round had plenty of storylines to follow: Graeme McDowell, with a 71-68-71, put himself near the top of the leaderboard. Dustin Jonson held the lead, shooting an impressive 66 for his third round. Mickelson struggled to find his game in the third round, shooting a 73. Tiger Woods, who had been distant, charged his way back into contention with a strong third round. Woods showed flashes of his old, dominate self with a third round 66. Ernie Els also stayed in surprising contention with a third round 72.
The fourth round was exciting and interesting, featuring a new champion and a major collapse. Dustin Johnson came into the final round with a three-stroke lead. Johnson, who is known for being impressive at Pebble Beach, suffered from an epic collapse. A triple bogey quickly knocked out his lead. He struggled on his next hole as well, peeling his ball into a hazard. Johnson collapsed to 8th place with an 11-over final round.
In the end, the day belonged to Graeme McDowell, the first European to win the U.S. Open in over 40 years. McDowell played strong as he watched his partner, Johnson, collapse and fall out of contention. Keeping his poise, McDowell finished with a 74 to win his first Major. No players scored under par for the tournament; McDowell ended his four rounds at an even 284. Gregory Havret finished with a +1, and Ernie Els finished third with a +2.
