It's been a pretty long time since we saw Matt Kuchar winning anything during the PGA Tour. It is because of this that we are not surprised he had a serious case of nerves when he ended up in a sudden death playoff during the fourth round of the Turning Stone tournament. He said that he had some difficulty falling asleep on Sunday night because his mind was racing so much. He said this on Monday after he managed to defeat Vaughn Taylor during the sixth additional hole during the championship at the Turning Stone Resort. He admitted that he had been extremely nervous, a feeling that he was not used to experiencing. Still, he said that it was a nervousness that he was excited to feel and that it made him feel alive.
Kuchar managed to roll in a putt from 18 inches away to achieve a par, taking the victory. This was his second tour victory all together, and the first victory that he has achieved in seven years. He had missed the Turning Stone cut two years ago, and was pleased to have a chance to return this year.
Kuchar was once a heralded amateur player who won the United States Amateur championship in 1997 following a three year run by Tiger Woods. He was also a star golfer in college when he played at Georgia Tech. He managed to win the Honda Classic in 2002, and that was his first ever full season while playing on the PGA Tour. But he hadn't gone on to win anything else until Monday.
Kuchar managed to improve to 2-0 during the playoffs, and the top prize that he received, a purse of $1.08 million dollars managed to boost his overall earnings for the year to past $2.3 million, which moved him up to number 25 on the money list. This year, his previous best finish during a tournament had been a tie for fifth place while playing at the Memorial Tournament back in June.
Both Taylor and Kuchar were tied for the lead following 72 holes, and neither player had managed to win following two separate playoff holes during play on Sunday. They each birdied a first hole, then took par on a second before the darkness forced play to be suspended. It was on Monday that Kuchar finally was allowed to take the lead, and the win. They managed to continue matching each other for a while, and there was a great deal of tension going on. At No. 12, Taylor nearly won, but he made a 21 foot long putt for a birdie and the ball stopped just before the hole. Kuchar managed to save par out of a bunker on the greenside.
