Travelers Championship Preview

travelerspreviewAfter the draining and lengthy U.S. Open tournament at Bethpage Black, it is surprising that there is still so much going on. What we have coming up now is the Travelers Championship tournament which is going to be held at the TPC River Highlands located in Cromwell in Connecticut. Oddsmakers are looking at Hunter Mahan as the favorite for this tournament, especially after he came in second place next to the winner of last year's travelers championship winner, Stewart Cink. Last year Mahan finished only a shot behind Cink. After shooting an even-par of 280 to finish out the Old Bethpage tournament, it is anyone's guess how Mahan is going to fare at this upcoming tournament.

Cink is coming into Thursday's tournament as the defending champion, and he is the underdog at +2000. He is known for dominating this course, however. In five top 10's at the River Highlands, Cink has two victories already and he looked sharp last time he played three weeks ago where he came in eighth place at Memorial with 285, -5.

There is great value to be found in Sergio Garcia, who is playing what so far has proven to be his best golf of the year following disappointing backers for much of 2009. He finished tied for 10th place during the U.S. Open tournament earlier in the week. He managed to be steady even though he was not all together spectacular during the Open tournament, and he walked away with three even-par 80s and a two-over 72 during the third round which was elongated.

Another player that is coming into the Travelers is Vijay Singh, who has done well on this particular course over the course of his golfing career, and while he has top fives, he has not come close to a win during the PGA tour this year, meaning that he may simply not be performing his best for a while yet. So while he has proven himself capable on this particular course in the past, that may not mean anything this year.

Pay attention to Kenny Perry, who has already taken a win this year, and who may be just about due for another during the Travelers. He has a good track record this year and so you cannot really go wrong with him. He managed to make the cut at the U.S. Open despite horrible conditions, he almost managed to take a win at the Masters, and he already has a total of seven top 10s, and two different top fives in his career for this Tour stop.

Another player that is well primed to take home a tour victory is David Toms, who has had numerous near-wins so far this year. He has six top 10 showings so far for 2009, and two summers ago he tied for sixth place in this exact tournament stop. He has a good track record and excellent statistics, meaning that he certainly does stand a chance to win this one if he brings his A-game to the course.
