This week in golf was relatively slow, following the incredible finish of last week’s U.S Open. This week’s tournament was the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. The tournament featured some big names, including Bubba Watson, Scott Verplank, Rickie Fowler, Ricky Barnes, Vijay Singh, Justin Rose, Padraig Harrington, Retief Goosen, and Stuart Appleby.
The first round of the championship featured some big names and some big scores. Padraig Harrington and Justin Rose had a share of the lead with a first round 64. Bubba Watson had a strong first round 65, as did Corey Pavin. A few players struggled in the first round; Rickie Fowler shot a 71, and Ricky Barnes fired a 69.
The cut for the tournament was -2, and most of the well-known players in the tournament managed to stay above the line. John Daly continued to struggle, firing a first round 71 and a second round 70 to record a 141 for his two rounds. Daly was only 3 strokes from making the cut.
A couple of big name players struggled in the third round of golf, while others managed to pick up the pace of their game. Kenny Perry followed up a 69 and 68 with a 73. Vijay Singh followed up a strong first half start of 65 and 66 with a 73. Meanwhile, Ricky Barnes fired a 64 to wind up in fourth place. Bubba Watson fired a 67, while Scott Verplank managed a 66. Retief Goosen also had an impressive round of golf, taking it into the clubhouse with a 64.
The final round of golf was fairly impressive. Bubba Watson came back from 6-behind the leaders to tie for the top spot with a final round-66. Bubba went into a playoff hole with Scott Verplank and Corey Pavin. Other notable finishes included Ricky Barnes at 5th, Padraig Harrington in 5th, Justin Rose at 9th, and Vijay Singh at 13th. Stuart Applebee struggled to a 27th place finish. Justin Rose was in first place after three rounds of golf, faltering with a fourth-round 75. Rose finished three strokes behind the lead.
The final was played out through a 2 hole playoff between Watson, Verplank, and Pavin. Corey Pavin was dropped after the first hole (the 18th hole) after both Watson and Verplank birdied the hole. Bubba Watson managed to take the tournament after shooting for a birdie on the second playoff hole (the 16th hole). The win is Watson’s first on the PGA tour.
Next week’s tournament is the AT&T National, boasting a field with multiple ranked players. Those expected to play include Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Ben Crane, Robert Allenby, Dustin Johnson, Vijay Singh, and Justin Rose.
