This week in Golf featured the Transitions Championship, held at Innisbrook in Tampa Bay, Florida. The purse for the tournament was $5.5 million, with the winner pocketing nearly $1 million. The tournament featured 500 FedExCup Points. Some of the players at the tournament included Nick Watney, Sergio Garcia, Rory Sabbatini, Justin Rose, Brandt Snedeker, Zach Johnson, Bubba Watson, Justin Leonard, Trevor Immelman, Rickey Barnes, and Retief Goosen.
Paul Casey came out of the first round of play with a lead, finishing with a 7-under round to take the top spot on the leaderboard. A large contingency of players came in at 67 under, three shots behind the leader. This included John Senden, Jim Furyk, Rory Sabbatini, and Justin Leonard. Sergio Garcia and Matteo Manassero both finished up with a 68.
The Second Round saw some surprises, with Garrett Willis and Chris Couch tied for the lead. One stroke behind them was Sergio Garcia, who is back from a golfing hiatus that has lasted, in America, for nearly 8 months. He shot a 66 to put himself into contention heading into the final two rounds of the tournament. Justin Rose and Paul Casey were two shots behind Garcia heading into Saturday.
The Cut for the Tournament was placed at -1, taking out some well known players. John Daly struggled with a 73 in his second round, ending his chances at finishing out the weekend. Padraig Harrington struggled with a 73 in his first round, also taking him out of contention and out of the weekend. K.J. Choi missed the cut, as did Ryo Ishikawa and David Duval.
Justin Rose carried a one shot lead into the final day of play after an impressive third round. Rose shot a 65 in the round to put himself at 13-under for the first three rounds of play. He held a one shot lead over Brendon de Jonge and Webb Simpson heading into the final round. Scott Stallings and Gary Woodland were two shots behind rose. Both players have never won a tournament before and are in serious contention after impressive third rounds.
In the end, Gary Woodland managed to step up and take over the lead in the tournament. Woodland shot up from fourth place after an impressive final round of 67, leaving him one shot ahead of second-place Webb Simpson. The players finished at -15 and -14, respectively. Scott Stallings managed a third place finish with a -12. Brandt Snedeker finished in fourth place. The rest of the top-10 was rounded out with a tie for fifth place. The tie included Marc Turnesa, Martin Laird, Roland Thatcher, Chris Couch, Justin Rose, and Brendon de Jonge. Sergio Garcia finished in a tie for 15th place, as did Rory Sabbatini. Jim Furyk finished in a tie for 13th place. Justin Leonard struggled to a finish in 20th place, and Ricky Barnes finished up in a tie for 28th place with, among other players, Bubba Watson and Trevor Immelman.
