Tips for Fat and Thin Shots

golfshotWhat's the Problem? Are you hitting behind the golf ball, or are you hitting to high up on the golf ball? Here are some tips:

  • This is most commonly caused by some swaying in the process of the swing. Any up and down or side to side head movement has to be avoided.
  • If you want to get the right feel then you are going to want to put your feet together and hit a couple of practice shots.
  • During the shift in your weight you are going to want to concentrate your attention on maintaining your weight on your right foot, especially along the inside of the foot.
  • You are going to want to check your progress, and this can be done by taking a practice swing while the sun is behind you so that you can keep an eye on your shadow.
  • You should never allow the club face to get ahead of the hands during the impact of the swing.
  • In order for you to avoid hitting a chip or a pitch fat you are going to want to prevent soling the club at the address and you are going to want to use a stance that is open and yet narrow.
  • You are going to want to keep your arms connected to your chest and you are going to want your body to rotate rather than sliding your hips in a lateral fashion which will allow you to jab your hands at the ball unnecessarily.
  • Now you should focus your eyes on the front of the ball and you should place your weight on the front foot. Your wrists should be placed ahead of the ball at the address and this should be maintained into the impact as well.
  • You are also going to want to make sure that you do a complete follow through as well.

Another problem is heel shots, where the heel of the club is making the contact with the ball rather than the face of the club, and what this results in is a ground ball toward the left that looks miserable.

  • What this can result from is when your weight is too far to the forward during impact.
  • What you are going to want to do is to try maintaining your weight back on your heels more than before.
  • You are also going to want to make sure that you are not too close to the ball where you are standing in preparation for the swing.
  • You should be extending your arms fully out during the address. This is going to help to make sure that your clubface is arriving in the proper alignment during the impact with the ball.
