Tiger Woods has managed to fire for a three under 69, allowing him to take the win in the Buick Open by a total of 3 shots. The World no. 1 led Michael Letzig by a single shot when going into the final round. This was the third Buick Open title that Woods has won, and his fourth title of the 2009 golf season.
The World no. 1 player Tiger Woods managed to cruise easily into a three shot victory during this last weekend's Buick Open, allowing him to claim a 69th title on the PGA tour, and his fourth title for the year so far. He was dressed in his customary red shirt for the last day of the tournament, and it seemed like he never faced a challenge that he could not completely wipe the course with.
Tiger Woods managed to card thee below 69, taking a 20 under the total of 268 after recovery from a first round 71 that left him in serious danger of missing the cut at the half way point. A second round went on to put him at 63 which was in contention before the 65 on Saturday. Over night he managed to rope in a single shot lead over his main competitor, Michael Letzig.
Michael Letzig managed to fade into a one-over 73 in the final round, allowing him to quickly slip out of contention. The main challenge ended up coming from Roland Thatcher, who managed to card a great eight below 64.
Tiger Woods is 36-1 right now in terms of PGA Tour events and he is leading right now going into the final round. He took the lead for the final run by taking a birdie on the fourth hole and then doubling it with a two during the shorter seventh hole. He had a par that was brilliantly scrambled after he spent the 13th hole in the water, but then the 16th hole gave him a birdie which allowed Tiger Woods to extend his overall lead to three strokes.
Greg Chalmers ended with 68, and John Senden ended with 70 and they ended up tied for second place along with Thatcher.
Then you have Y.E. Yang from South Korea, with 67, who finished in fifth place with 16 below 272.
Tiger Woods was claiming his third victory here at Warwick Hills, and was playing his first ever event since he managed to miss the British Open cut at Turnberry recently. He is going to end up playing one more PGA tour event before he attempts to win his very first major for this season, which is going to be the PGA Championship being held at Hazeltine.
In terms of other tournament action, a superb performance was produced by Fred Funk, carding a final round 7 under 65 in order to win the United States Seniors Open which was held at Crooked Stick, by a nice six shot lead. Funk started the day with only a one-shot lead over competitor Greg Norman, but he finished at 20 under at the end with second place going to Joey Sindelaar, and Norman eventually faded back to tie for fourth place.
