Tiger Woods has announced that he is feeling very confident that he is going to be competing in the Masters tournament in April 2009, even though he has not yet been given a date by his doctors regarding when he can begin playing again following a knee injury and subsequent surgeries.
Tiger Woods has said that if he takes six months off following his knee surgery that puts him into January. Another four months puts him into ten months worth of recovery. Tiger Woods feels confident that after ten months worth of recovery, he should have absolutely no trouble returning from his surgery in good form for the Masters Golf Tournament.
Generally speaking, American football players are more than able to return back to their game between six and nine months after an injury. Tiger Woods believes that if an American Football player can do it at that level and in that amount of time, then he should be able to do it in golf in ten months as well. However, Tiger is trying to balance his optimism with a good dose of caution as well, because his injury involves a ligament in his knee, and he has to be able to let it heal if he wants to get full capability back in his leg. Ligaments need to be able to become taut again, so if it's stretched out prematurely, Tiger could end up with the same injury issues he ended the 2008 season with. Keeping this ligament taut means that the world no. 1 golfer must stay on a straight plane rather than attempting any kind of rotation.
Woods has not been able to take a full swing since the United States Open at Torrey Pines in California in June. That was the same week that he managed to defeat Rocco Mediate on a play off play off, which allowed him to bag his 14th major tournament win. He had an operation during the following week, where a tendon was removed from his right knee in order to replace the damaged anterior cruciate ligament that he injured in his left leg. He appeared at Torrey Pines as a caddie for the Buick Sweepstake winner recently, and did not seem to have any problems with his leg or his knee when he stepped out of his cart to study the putt lines.
Tiger Woods injured his leg worse during his most recent tournament play, as his leg had already been bothering him. Following the tournament and the subsequent surgery, Woods had to make the decision to sit out the remainder of the tournament because he was no longer fit to continue playing. While original reports stated that he might be back as early as January or February, Woods is targeting April and the Masters tournament as an ideal time to begin his career anew.
