The World Golf Championships, known as the WGC, is a lengthy series of high profile golf tournaments using international fields. This championship series is perceived to be one of the most vital tournaments to the sport outside of the Player's Championship and the four Majors.
In the run up to the last Major this year, the PGA Championship, The WGC Bridgestone Invitational is scheduled to be played next week and already it has attracted some of the top players in the world. The WGC Bridgestone Invitational is one of the four yearly WGC World Golf Championships. It has been organized as well as sanctioned by the International Federation for PGA Tours. The prize money purse offered during this championship tournament is offered both for the PGA European Tour and the normal PGA Tour as well.
The WGC Bridgestone Invitational was originally the World Series of Golf, and in 1999 it merged over and became a part of the series of World Golf Championships. This event, which was sponsored by NEC until 2005 was originally known as the WGC-NEC championship invitational. In 2006, however, the tournament changed hands and changed sponsorships and now Bridgestone has taken over as title sponsor in place of the NEC. As a part of this new five year sponsorship, the event is going to continue to be held in the traditional site, which is the Firestone Country Club, which is located in Akron, a city in Ohio.
The original beginnings of the World Golf Championships tournament came about in 1962. There were four people and only two rounds, and the tournament was better known as the World Series of Golf rather than the World Golf Championships. The WSOG was quite similar to the Grand Slam of Golf, held by the PGA today. In 1976 however, the WSOG decided to expand in order to become a four-round, full field tournament, and it became an official event when it joined the normal PGA Tour.
Four times in the past, Jack Nicklaus managed to win the WSOG unofficial versions, including the first year that it was ever played. Since it became official, he has also won the PGA Tour's WSOG one time, the year it became official in 1976. Since it became a truly official tour event for the PGA Tour, the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational has been played at the south course on the Firestone Country Club in nearly every year, save for one. In 2002, this event was played instead in Sammamish, Washington at the Sahalee Country Club.
This World Golf Championships comes to you on behalf of the international Federation for PGA Tours, which formed in the year 1996. This international federation for PGA tours has a number of members including the Asian Tour, the Japan Golf Tour, the European Tour, the PGA Tour, the PGA Tour for Australasia and the Southern Africa Tour as well.
