The PGA Tour is getting ready to finally begin the very end of the primary golf schedule this upcoming week by kicking off the first event out of the four tournament long FedEx Cup tournament. After hyping up the playoffs all throughout the entire season, it is going to take four weeks worth of Tiger Woods or someone equally as good to walk away holding the winner's share of the playoff package bonus. The winner's share alone is $10 million dollars and the playoff bonus package is a total sum of $35 million dollars.
The tour is going to say that the first couple years so far of this FedEx cup tournament have certainly been successful, and they would be pretty much right. In 2007, Tiger Woods won, and then in 2008, Vijay Singh won. Woods clearly is going to be the favorite among most going into the playoff events for this month. And the tour has definitely been willing and wanting to make tweaks to the playoffs just a little every year in order to create a much more compelling competition. This is fine too, of course, as most sports should be willing to make small changes if it means making things a little more exciting for the fans.
Here are a few things that you should understand now, before the playoffs are kicked off:
The qualifiers are not going to be required to play.
If Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson or some other hot shot golfer decides that they want to skip one of either of the first two golfing events out of the four-event-long playoffs, then they are still going to be eligible to play the following week. The reason for this is because they have built up such a large number of points during the golf season that missing an event is not going to cost them a spot in the rest of the tournament events. The tour event really made a big deal out of announcing this last Friday that Woods had already agreed to play during the Bayclay's this upcoming week, though, which is the first of the four tournament events.
There is going to be more volatility during this year.
The PGA tour has addressed this recently after Singh had to complete only 72 holes out of the Tour championship to have wrapped up a title. The tour decided to reduce the field for the first three of the playoff events, changing up the points system so that points are reset only before the championship finale for the tour rather than prior to the first playoff event. Now it is possible for any of the top five golfers going into this champion can win the FedEx Cup title mathematically with a win in the event, and then the players six through ten can win the $10 million by claiming a tour championship victory with the top five struggling instead.
