The final week in July supplied golf lovers with The Greenbrier Classic, held at the Old White Course in White Sulphur Springs, W. VA. The winner of this tournament stands to gain over $1 Million and 500 FedEx Cup Points. Some of the big names in this year’s tournament included Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker, Stuart Appleby, Justin Leonard, Aaron Baddeley, Davis Love III, John Daly, Ricky Barnes, Trevor Immelman, and Kenny Perry.
The end of the first round brought about two surprising leaders in Erik Compton and Matt Every. Erik Compton was playing in the tournament on a sponsor exemption, and Matt Every is a rookie on the PGA Tour. Both men shot a 7-under 63 doing into the second day of play. Three players tied for second, including George McNeill, Jeff Overton, and Pat Perez. John Daly struggled on the first day with a 69, as did Sergio Garcia who came into the clubhouse with a 68.
Jeff Overton moved into the lead during the second round, firing a 62 to take a four stroke lead. Boo Weekely made a strong move, firing a 7-under 63 to jump into second place. Weekely managed to hit 17 greens in regulation to improve to a grand total of 10-under. Erik Compton fell back to third place after a second-round 68. The cut for the tournament was -2: Trevor Immelman and Kenny Perry both failed to make the cut.
Jeff Overton continued his run, earning a three-stroke lead after a 4-under 66 in the third round. Boo Weekely was strong once again, firing off a 67 to go into the last round with a 13-under. He was tied for fourth with Jonathan Byrd, Brendon de Jonge, and Jimmy Walker. Rickie Fowler was cut after the third round, ending with a 206. John Daly barely made the cut after firing off a third round 67.
Stuart Appleby had been playing relatively decent during the entire tournament. Appleby managed a 66, 68, and 65 to wind up in 7th place. Appleby had the round of his life, managing a record-breaking 59 during his final round. This incredible under-60 score vaulted him into first place, giving him his first win in four years. Appleby is only the fifth player in PGA tour history to hit the elusive 59.
Overton struggled somewhat, shooting his worst round of the tournament with a 67. Overton wound up just 1 stroke behind Appleby. Brendon de Jonge finished with a 65 to end up in third place. Woody Austin and Paul Stankowski tied with a 15-under tournament to tie for fourth place and round out the top 5. Boo Weekely struggled with a fourth round 69 to end of in a 7-way tie for 9th place.
Next week’s tournament is the Turning Stone Resort Championship at Atunyote golf Club and the World Golf championship – Bridgestone Invitation at Firestone CC.
