The Byron Nelson Championship in Irving, Texas captured the attention of the nation as 16-year-old Jordan Spieth worked attempted to become the youngest player to win a PGA tour championship.
The headlines come Sunday were different, however, as 22 year old Jason Day captured the Byron Nelson championship. Day of Australia fired a 66 for the first round, followed by a second round of 65. With a third round of 67, Day finished off his tournament with a 72. Scores were higher on the final day, allowing Day to overtake the lead and finish off his first career win with his poor final round.
Jordan Spieth still stole the show, however, making headlines after capturing the attention of the golfing world. Jordan was the sixth-youngest player ever to make the cut of a PGA championship after firing a first-round 68 and second-round 69. At -3, Spieth was 22nd. Spieth is relatively used to success, however, as he is the reigning U.S. Junior Amateur champion
While Spieth came within 3 shots of the lead after the first 9 of his final round, he started to come apart, shooting a final-round 72. Spieth bogeyed the 13th and 18th holes, while double bogeying the 15th hole at the TPC Four Seasons Resort. The field featured players Scott Verplank, Jeff Overton, Stewart Cink, Y.E. Yang, and Rory Sabatini. Jeff Overton finished second with an overall score of 8 under. Kenny Perry finished at 4 under, while Stewart Cink came in at 3 under. Y.E. Yang came in with a score of 1 under, while Rory Sabbatini struggled to a 1 over final score. Players Rocco Mediate and Stuart Applebee failed to make the cut. Vijay sing had a rough tournament, finishing 149 out of 156 players, shooting a first-round 73 and second-round 75. Singh had a difficult week, falling out of the Top-50 rankings for the first time since 1992.
Jason Day was still the name of the tournament, however, as he raised the trophy on Sunday. Jason was not caught up in all of the talk about Jordan Spieth; he himself is the youngest winner on the Nationwide Tour, taking his first win at age 19. Day held on with a 2-over final round, bogeying holes 1, 5, 7, 8, 13, and 18. Birdies on 2, 4, 11, and 12 helped to keep him two strokes ahead of second place Jeff Overton, Blake Adams, and Brian Gray. Overton stayed close, but shot bogeys on 3, 6, 11, and 14, keeping him from the numbers he needed to overtake Day.
In an interesting twist, Day continues to fight a random illness that has puzzled doctors who have been unable to pinpoint the issue. After finally being given a shot and antibiotics, Day was finally able to push the sickness aside to get the win.
The next tournament is the Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worth Texas from May 27th to May 30th. Steve Stricker is the defending champion in a field that includes Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey, Geoff Ogilvy, and Y.E. Yang.
