The Backswing
May 23rd, 2010 | Golf Ball Driver, Tips and Tricks
The swing itself, to a very large degree, is actually a chain reaction if you think about it. When you make one good move, then that is generally going to lead to another good move. If on the other hand you end up making a mistake, then another mistake is usually going to follow suit unfortunately. This is why the first move away from your ball is so vitally important, because it is going to set the pattern for the entire rest of your swing.
The Backswing -
1 - From an address position that is solid, your main thought is going to want to be for you to swing the club in a smooth manner away from the ball. You should be keeping both your body and your arms working in total harmony.
2 - The next movement that you are going to do is referred to as a one piece takeaway. This is going to be the most reliable type of method. The clubface should be moving away low to the ground and it should be gradually arching inside of the target line as your left arm extends away and your body rotates.
3 - Now the wrist should be naturally hinging or setting in harmony with the swinging motion of your club head. You should be keeping in mind as you are swinging your arms that your body should also be rotating at the same time, in harmony. Each of the component parts in this swing are going to work together. Your arms should absolutely never be working independently of any other part of your body during the backswing.
4 - As you are reaching the top of your back swing, the golf club should still be on the line and it should be parallel to the target that you have in mind.
5a - There are two possible errors that might be introduced when it comes to club alignment at the top of your swing. The first one is that you can find yourself in a laid off position, where your club is pointing left of the target.
5b - The opposite to this possible error is that your club could be across the line pointing to the right of the target. Each of these erroneous positions is an indicator that you have swung improperly when swinging away from the ball. As a result, you are probably going to deliver the club head to the ball in an incorrect manner and this is going to cause a shot that goes crooked.
The backswing is only part of the equation - After you perfect your backswing, you move onto your downswing, which is where the ball and the club head connect.
