Texas Open and FedEx Cup Golf Tournament Recap

Sunday managed to bring about some wild endings to golf tournaments all over the globe including the Texas Open and the FedEx Cup. The crowd roared when Johnson managed to sink a birdie putt that allowed him to successfully defend his longstanding Texas Open title, ending the unlikely surge Driscoll managed to drum up in the final round from 8 strokes behind.

The tournament was held at the La Cantera Golf Club, which lit up with roars from the crowd when Johnson took the win, capping a wild shootout where seven different players were standing within a stroke, and only four holes were left. Johnson, who took the 2007 Masters championship, followed a 60 in the third round with a 70 in order to catch up with Driscoll at 15 below 265, but then he stole his sixth PGA tour victory in his career by hitting the 6-iron approach during the playoff.

Johnson's share of the purse was a cool $1,098,000. He told the crowd "I feel very lucky". He managed to vault to the top of the standings for the FedEx cup, having passed up Phil Mickelson as well as Geoff Ogilvy, the only other two individuals that have won twice during the PGA Tour this season. Johnson also managed to win the Sony Open in January, so he appears to be having a solid season.

Paul Goydos managed to take a one stroke lead with only two holes remaining, but his final two holes were bogeys so he walked away with a 69, left a stroke behind along with Bill Haas who had a 65 and managed to birdie five out of six holes between holes numbered 11 and 16, but then he went on to miss a 6-foot putt on the 17th hole with a par of three.

Marc Leishman from Australia ended with 68 for a -13. Fredrik Jacobson ended with a 67 for -13. Finally, three-time tournament champion Justin Leonard managed to finish at -13 with 69.

When the round began, Driscoll was sitting at -7, a solid eight strokes behind Johnson as well as Leonard and Goydos. After he wrapped up his 62, Driscoll spent more than an hour waiting for the round to be finished by Johnson. It was well worth the wait, but it did not last very long.

The tournament finished with Johnson and Driscoll both at 15 under, Johnson having won in the playoffs. Haas and Goydos both finished at 14 under. Davis, Jacobson, Leishman and Leonard all finished at 13 under. Driscoll had unfortunately been in the position for one of the biggest comebacks in the entire history of the Texas Open, but instead he had to settle for his third top-ten finish. The crowded leader board was briefly topped by Goydos when he sunk a 13-foot birdie on the 16th hole with a par of 4 but then the last two holes caused him to fall back, pushing him out of the running.
