June 25th, 2009 — CA, Carter Moorish, Copperopolis, Dress code, golf courses
Saddle Creek Golf Course is located in: Copperopolis, CA
Phone: 800.611.7722

Website: http://www.saddlecreek.com
Course History:
This is a fairly new course that is part of a resort and residential area. It first opened in 1996 and was designed by Carter Moorish. This is a beautiful course that made excellent use of the surrounding countryside and it quickly became a very popular spot with locals.
The resort offers several stay and play packages and people come from all over the world to experience this course. The level of play is just challenging enough without being too intimidating for the novice player. The course has been voted the 8th best in California by Golf Week Magazine and has also won numerous other accolades.
What You Need to Know:
This is a traditional course, so it is best to wear a traditional golf shirt and slacks. Denim is not permitted on the course. You can register your tee time by calling the number above. Since this is a resort course, it can be very busy during the high travel season, so it is best to book ahead in order to reserve your spot.
We found the amenities to be top notch and the grill was absolutely terrific. It's easy to relax in the sumptuous club house and the staff was very friendly. Overall, this was a very enjoyable trip and we highly recommend it to anyone. The fees are actually quite low given the quality of the course and the natural beauty of the surrounding area makes for a truly elegant time, even at budget prices.
Playing Hints:
Water hazards are the number one issue with this course. You'll be dealing with them on nearly every hole and they range from small little ponds to enormous lakes. You'll need to steer clear of these and work on your accuracy to ensure that your drives don't end up in the drink.
Our favorite hole was the 11th, where you'll be driving across the water. It's a short par three, but you will need to work to get a par. The green is well protected with sand traps and it is no easy task to get your ball to land exactly where you want it. We also enjoyed the 18th hole. Even though there are plenty of traps situated on the fairway, it was just the right size to allow you enough room to make up for any past holes that drove your score down. You should be able to birdie this hole without difficulty.

June 22nd, 2009 — Dress code, Golf Ball Driver, Robert Trent Jones, golf courses
Greenhorn Creek Golf Course is located in: Angels Camp, CA
Phone: 888-736-5900

Website: http://www.greenhorncreek.com
Course History:
Robert Trent Jones II designed this truly remarkable course that is nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills. This is truly a marvelous course both in terms of challenging play and sheer natural beauty. We really enjoyed the fact that the designer kept many of the natural elements of the course intact and were pleasantly surprised by our whole stay here. If you're looking for a fun but challenging course that features heart stopping beauty, this is definitely one to try.
What You Need to Know:
The course has a pretty strict dress code, and denim is forbidden. Collared shirts are a must for both men and women and the dress code also applies on the driving range. The course management also requests that all players use soft spikes. They can help you change them out at the pro shop if you don't have your own.
We really enjoyed the GPS carts at this course and the facilities were truly remarkable. This is by far one of the nicest kept courses we've seen in some time and the staff really will go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. The fees are quite low considering the level of service that you get and overall, we hated to leave! The grill has some terrific food and the club house is very nicely appointed.
You can register your tee time by calling the number listed above, and it's also a good idea to check their website for specials before you do. Although their fees aren't high, they do have some really great deals that they post every month.
Playing Hints:
You really won't be dealing with a lot of sand traps or water hazards, especially when compared to some courses, but that doesn't mean that this course isn't challenging. The natural terrain is your worst enemy here, as are the trees and rock walls that spring up all over the place. You'll really need to work on accuracy and power here. The fairways are narrow and tree lined and we found most of them to be quite long.
Our favorite hole was the 12th and it is a challenge to say the least. The green is situated above the fairway and it is very easy to go too long if you're not careful. On the plus side though, if you do hit it a little long and to the right, there is a natural slope down that will deposit your ball right back on the green.

June 3rd, 2009 — CA, Dress code, Seaside, golf courses, restaurant
Bayonet Golf Course is located in Seaside, CA
Phone: 831-899-7271

Website: http://www.bayonetblackhorse.com
Course History:
The Bayonet golf course is one of two courses at this location. The Black Horse course integrates with this one and you can choose to play one or the other, or mix it up with nine holes on each. The new additions to the courses are only a few years old, and in fact, the Black Horse back nine were just recently completed. There is a resort onsite and this has quickly become a very popular destination.
The old Bayonet course dates back to 1954 and was the brainchild of General McClure. The course is actually built on the old site of Fort Ord.
What You Need to Know:
This is a very traditional golf course, so we recommend proper golfing attire and soft spikes. You can register your tee time by calling the number listed above, and we highly recommend giving enough of a lag time to ensure getting the time you want. These are very busy and popular courses.
Once you play a round, you'll see why - it is hard to find a round of golf this challenging anywhere else in California. In fact, it has even some of the most famous courses beat, even to some degree, Pebble Beach. They recently added a new online registration system for tee times as well, and they frequently run special offers. We highly recommend checking them out before you book your time.
The grill is worth the trip alone and we have not seen a club house this nice in a very long time. It's all about comfort and relaxation, and after a round on this course, you're going to need it! The pro shop was terrific, and you can browse through most of their products right online. We can't say enough nice things about this amazing course and would recommend it to anyone.
Playing Hints:
You will definitely want to bring your best game to play here. The sand traps are cavernous and the water hazards are treacherous. The eighth hole is a real killer, measuring in at just over 600 yards. Save your strength, since you'll be headed for the ninth hole for a total of more than 1000 yards for both.
Overall, our best advice is to hit long and hard, and don't neglect your short game. It's almost impossible to get a par here, unless you are a very seasoned pro, but it sure is a lot of fun trying.

June 3rd, 2009 — Tips and Tricks
Even the best golfers can end up at the bottom of a sand trap every once in awhile and it pays to know how to get out of one. This is probably one of the most frustrating hazards you can run into while you’re golfing, but there are some tips that you can use that will help you keep your score intact. While it’s always best to avoid sand traps, when you do end up in one, these tips will help get you out.
1. Get the right kind of sand wedge.
There is a lot of variation in clubs, especially with different manufacturers. Ideally, you’re going to want to purchase a sand wedge that has a degree of 55 to 58 in loft. 57 or 58 is the best, but if you’re really a good player, you can get away with a 55. Simply by purchasing the right kind of sand wedge, you can conquer just about any trap. The bounce rate is also important here, and can have a big impact on where you end up on the green. Look for one that has a bounce rate on the lower end of the spectrum for greater control.
2. Correct your position.
If you are standing wrong, you’ll be putting the wedge too far underneath the ball, and the only place you’re going to go is down. It is important to open up your stance, and make sure that the club face is not closed. Work on this at home or in a practice trap until you develop the right feel. You should be able to see most of the club face when you are looking down at it from above.
3. Work on your swing.
It can be tempting to get really choppy with your swing, but this can spell disaster. Even though it is a pitch shot, you’re going to want to stay as fluid as possible. Work on bringing your club back slowly, along a straight line. The power will come when you connect with the ball, not with your backswing.
4. Learn how to snap your wrist.
We mentioned above that the point of impact is where you want to focus your power on this swing. Practice snapping your left wrist so that your hand is bent to left. Put your hands together without a club in a praying position and then snap them to the side. Add the club and make the same movement. That’s what it will feel like at the point when you are ready to hit the ball.
5. Putting it all together.
When you practice your sand trap shot, try to put all of these tips together so that it is one fluid motion. Start by working on the backswing and then add the snap at just the right moment. It can take a few tries to perfect this, but once you do you should see a big change in the way you play in the sand.

Alhambra Golf Course is located in: Alhambra, CA
Phone: (626) 570-5059
Website: www.alhambragolf.com
Course History:
Considered to be one of the best kept secrets in Southern California, Alhambra Golf Course offers a rare level of play at an incredible price. You’ll be able to play on this amazing course for less than $30 in most cases, and compared to other courses in the same area, that is definitely a steal. We haven’t come across a course this nice, or this cheap in a long time, so it was a definite treat to visit here.
The course is a bit short, coming in at just over 5200 yards, but they do have a regulation 70 par. It’s actually made up of two distinct nine hole courses, but if you choose to play both, you’ll find the experience quite fun.
What You Need to Know:
You can register your tee time by calling the number above and the course also has an online registration system. We highly recommend checking out the practice facility, which in keeping with how the course handles things, is incredibly valuable and offers some great chances to improve your game.
This is a public course, so the dress code is not as strict. We do however recommend soft spikes while you’re here. The pro shop is well stocked and we really enjoyed the grill. Considering that this is a municipal course, it completely exceeded our expectations.
Playing Hints:
This is a pretty straightforward course that is suitable for both novices and professionals. There are not a lot of hazards, but the terrain can be a bit challenging at times. There are two main water bodies, and they affect mainly the ninth and seventh holes, and slightly the second hole.
There are a few sand traps to avoid, but overall, this is a fun course to play and a great place to get in a solid practice round. Our favorite hole was the tenth hole. On this one, you’re going to want to go a little to the left on your drive in order to avoid the gigantic tree that is smack dab in the middle of the fairway. From there head a little right to make it on the green with your second shot.

Course History:
Del Norte Golf Course is a semi-private club that is open to the public. The course is actually nine holes, but most players prefer to schedule a round of eighteen. The course was built in 1953 and instantly became a favorite among residents and those passing through the area. It is known for its natural beauty and the scenic surroundings. You are literally within walking distance of the Redwood National Park.
What You Need to Know:
This is designed as a walking course, but carts are available. We found the terrain to be pretty decent, so if you're looking for a solid workout that is not too strenuous you shouldn't need a cart. However, if you do need to move your game along a cart will help.
You can register your tee time by calling the number listed above. The on site pro shop is incredibly well stocked and carries all the major labels for gear. We found the staff very helpful and this is a great place to stock up on gifts thanks to the low prices. The club restaurant was top-notch and featured a nice mix of different cuisines and old favorites. Very good service and a pleasing place to relax after a round of golf.
Playing Hints:
The trees are the biggest challenge on this course and it is very easy to hit into them if your accuracy is not the best. Most players have to struggle with more than a few ricochets during their game. Try to aim for the middle of the fairway on most of your shots to avoid the trees. If you've got a hook or a slice, it might be a bit difficult until you get the hang of the course.
There is only one water hazard, a creek, and it affects two holes. However, it is not very difficult to get past it and should not affect your game too much. There are plenty of sand traps and bunkers though, so your approach shots will need to be carefully placed to avoid losing your chance at par. Once you are in the bunker, good luck getting out!
This is a very nice course to play that is very well suited for novices as well as pros.
