Three Keys to Golf Swings

keysIf you, just like many other golfers before you, are looking for ways to improve your game as well as to lower your score, then you probably know that the best way that you can possibly improve your golf game is to find the keys to improving your golf swings, which will allow you to open the door separating you from the next level of your golf game. So do you want to know what keys are out there and how you can use them to your greatest possible level of advantage? Keep reading, as we are going to touch on three keys that will improve your golf swing right now.

- * One of the simplest and most straight forward golf swing techniques that you should try out is simply to film yourself swinging so that you can analyze the motions that you make and take. This is a truly effective method of analyzing what you are doing, and it can give you an incredible advantage over players. If you need help, ask a friend to do the filming for you. If you sit down and actually analyze your golfing abilities the way a trainer would, then this can pay off significantly in a small amount of time by allowing you to identify your own weak points, rather than having to pay an expensive trainer to tell you what your weak points are.

- * Although this should go without saying, you absolutely need to be able to concentrate yourself while you are taking a swing. Mental fitness is one of the most important keys to success. You need to train your brain to take the swing correctly and you will be able to achieve the quick results that you are looking for. You need a good golf fitness guide that is going to improve not only your physical fitness but also your mental fitness as well. If you have the right tools, then your needs will be met and your golf game will surely be improved.

- * Finally, you need to take the time to improve your stance. Making improvements in your stance can really go a long way when it comes to improving your golf swing and making sure that you do not slice the ball. If your stance is solid and sturdy, then you will not slice the ball nearly as often. You should put your shoulders up, and you should be taking care to stay ahead of the ball. Your stance should actually be about as wide as your shoulders, and your right foot should be straight to the ball with the left foot pointed slightly in the direction of the left. Film yourself if you are unsure about whether or not you are maintaining the right stance, and analyze yourself so that you can improve your game.

Golf Tips: Addressing the Ball

One of the biggest problems for many golfers comes when it is time to address the ball. There are so many things that can go wrong, that it is all too easy to lose your focus and end up spoiling your shot because your mental game is a mess. Here are some great tips to help you address the ball, get rid of these worries and have a more enjoyable round of golf.

1. Put it into perspective.

Instead of stressing about whether you are going to hook or slice it, just focus on hitting the ball and cross the next bridge when you get to it. Nine times out of ten, simply by thinking about doing something wrong, you subconsciously do it anyway. Adopt a “who cares” attitude about your shot, and you may find that your accuracy improves and you no longer even have an issue with hooking or slicing.

2. Get your feet straight.

Your feet and as such, the direction of your hips are a big component of your stance and the way that you address the ball. Take a few seconds to make sure that your feet are lined up properly and that your hips are facing forward. It shouldn’t take long to get into a rhythm where your stance becomes automatic. Once again, don’t over think it. Just set your feet and move on.

3. Get a grip.

Having the proper grip on your club will also have a huge impact on the way that you swing. As you are addressing the ball, take a second to make sure that your grip is right. The key is not to stress on the point, but just make a quick mental note to fix your grip. After a few tries, you’ll find that it is much easier to go up to the ball and immediately find the perfect grip.

4. Walk away.

If the shot doesn’t feel right, don’t take it. Walk away for a minute and do a practice swing. This may be a little tough if the speed of play if very fast, but most people will understand if you want to get the shot right. Sometimes, if the feel is just wrong, the only way to salvage that shot is to fix it before you take it. Walking away can help you clear your mind and you can “start over” when you address the ball again.

5. Let go.

At the end of the day, this is a game, and it is supposed to be fun. Don’t get all wrung out about your score and try to remember that each hole is just another opportunity to get better. By getting the right mental game, you’ll notice that your real game will automatically improve. It takes time to develop skills and no one becomes a championship level golfer over night.

Practice is essential, but when it comes down to it, golfing should be a relaxing but challenging sport. Don’t let it get the best of you.

The Negotiable Golf Swing: How to Improve Your Game Without Picture-Perfect Form by Joseph Laurentino

Golfers can spend their entire lives trying to perfect their swing, or their stance and for many this pursuit always falls just short of their goals. Enter Joseph Laurentino, the author of The Negotiable Swing and his assertion that it is possible to play a great round of golf, even if your form is not perfect. There is certainly enough evidence to back him up – one weekend of watching pro golf on television can prove his point quite well.

But, how does the average golfer put that to work for themselves – in their own game. Laurentino offers some hard hitting advice that may change the way you think about golf and certainly about the way that you stand. While the stance and the swing are essential, perfection may not be in many cases.

The first three chapters cover basic form and common problems that golfers have. Chapter three is probably the most interesting out of the three since it discusses at length which aspects of your stance and swing are “negotiable” or what may not matter as much as you think it does. This is a fascinating discussion that raised a lot of new points.

The next group of chapters cover the different elements of the swing and how to make the most of what you have. We found these sections to be incredibly informative and helpful. For the everyday golfer, this is real advice that you most likely wouldn’t get from a course pro.

Last but not least, chapter twelve covers at length whether or not you as a player would benefit from instruction. This is a terrific look that encourages you to be honest with yourself, but still realize that there are some things about your stance that you may never be able to change. By realizing this, you may be able to save quite a lot of money on instruction fees and still be able to get the results you’re looking for out on the course.

We highly recommend this golf book to anyone that is struggling with their form and feels as though they will never get it right. You may not have to! While there is no replacement for proper form and learning the fundamentals of golf, Laurentino does offer hope to those of us that are still struggling to get it “right.” If you have ever wished you could play like a pro, or you are just trying to shave a few points off your game, this book may have the perfect answer for you.

We’ve read a lot of different golf books, and Laurentino’s newest book definitely made it into our top ten. He does a great job of writing in a style that is easy to read while still being very informative. While those that don’t have a problem with their stance or swing (and they are most likely in the minority) may not need this book, the rest of us can certainly benefit from it.

Phone: (951) 769-7200

Website: http://www.oakvalleygolf.com/pages.asp?pid=33

Course History:

This gorgeous golf course is home to several PGA events every year and it is easy to see why. It literally looks as though it was painted into the surroundings and you simply cannot find a more beautiful course in this area. If you're planning a trip to the Beaumont area, this is a course that you simply must play.

With just the right mix of terrain, this course is very challenging but always fun to play. It's easy to see why it achieved instant fame with locals and players from around the world.

What You Need to Know:

This is a very traditional course and they do have a dress code. Collared shirts are required, and appropriate pants or shorts are allowed. They do not allow denim in any form on the course and we do recommend soft spikes for this facility. You can register your tee time online or by calling the number listed above. They do carry soft spikes at the pro shop if you do not have them already.

Speaking of the pro shop, it is simply fantastic. We've seen a lot in our days, but this was one of the best stocked shops in the area. Very friendly service as well and a great place to buy gifts for the golfers on your list. The clubhouse was incomparable and worth the trip just for the food.

Playing Tips:

Since this is a challenging course, you'll need to bring your best game. There are not a lot of water hazards, only two, so you won't have to worry about that. However, the elevation changes are a whole other matter. Our favorite hole was the seventh hole. It looks easy, but it's anything but. You'll have a straight shot to the green from the tee, but in the middle, you'll be dealing with a lot of undulation. Try for a really strong tee shot and just keep aiming straight ahead.

Cherry Island Golf Course is located in: Elverta, CA

Cherry Island Golf Course, Elverta, CA

Website: http://www.empiregolf.com/empire/cherryisland

Course History:

Robert Muir Graves, one of the most celebrated course archtitects today designed this course in 1990. It has become an area favorite with most golfers and offers just the right level of challenging play for golfers of all skill levels. The course is lush and scenic and is a great place to relax and get away from it all. It is tucked away, so we included directions on how to get to the course below.

What You Need to Know:

This is truly a full service golf course with a great grill, pro shop and lessons. The practice facility is terrific and offers numerous opportunities to improve on your game. This is a public course but we still recommend wearing appropriate golf attire.

You can register your tee time by calling the number above, but you may want to check out their website as they post frequent specials to save on their already reasonable green fees.

Playing Hints:

Water hazards are plentiful here and there are a few that are quite tricky. The first hole is clear of these but the sharp dog leg will definitely test your skills. The third, fourth, sixth and seventh holes all feature large lakes, so you'll want to try to be as accurate as possible on your tee shots.

The thirteenth hole is bisected by a creek, so you'll need to watch your tee shot here. Some players may prefer to hit it short and then iron over the creek to be on the safe side. The eighteenth hole is no gimme and meanders along with plenty of rough patches to keep you guessing. This one will take some time to master, but you should be able to birdie it with practice. This is a long course so we really recommend making use of a cart unless you are in tip top shape.

How Avid Golfers Can Avoid Joint Erosion

If you are an avid golfer that plays several times a week, there is a risk that you could develop joint erosion. This is a painful process that can reduce your swing, and make it difficult to function normally. However, there are steps every avid golfer can take that will help them avoid joint erosion.

Wrists

This is a very common problem area for many golfers. Your wrists are a big part of your game and if you’re not protecting them, you may find that after awhile you experience joint pain. It is vital to wear proper golf gloves that will support your wrists and help make the impact less noticeable. A good pair of golf gloves can go a long way in protecting your wrists and preventing future problems, such as joint erosion.

Shoulders

This is another problem area that can flare up suddenly in many golfers. You’ll be using your shoulders quite a bit while you play and repetitive motion can be very hard on your joints. Try to take a few days off if you notice excess strain on your shoulders and make sure that you stretch beforehand. One of the best ways to prevent joint erosion in the shoulders is to space out your playing time and to make sure that you are swinging properly. However, if you do play a lot, this may not be enough to keep your joints sound. Consider speaking with your physician about medications that can prevent joint erosion.

Hips

Since your hips are a large part of your swing, and you’ll be using them if you are walking a course, it is important to protect these joints as well. Minimize your walking time if you already are experiencing joint pain, and take advantage of a cart whenever possible. This can help reduce the overall wear and tear on your joints. Having the proper form can also have a big impact on how your hip joints wear over time.

These are just a few examples of the major joints that can be affected by erosion. While there may not be a cure-all preventative, you can minimize the damage that you are causing by taking the steps to ensure that you are swinging properly and using the right equipment to support your joints.

Sometimes, the best medicine is simply to reduce the amount of golf you play each week, or you may be able to get extra help from your physician as mentioned above. There are also supplements that will help keep your joints lubricated, to further reduce the risk of joint erosion, but once again, these should only be used under the care of a physician since they may interact with other medications.

Joint erosion is a problem that affects millions, but with care, special attention and the right equipment, you can do your part to reduce the risks that you may develop this painful condition in the future or prevent an existing condition from getting worse.

Diagnosing Your Swing Problems

One of the biggest problems that most golfers face is figuring out where they are going wrong when it comes to their swing. Volumes have been written about the art of the swing and still people have difficulty. If you are trying to see where you are going wrong, there are a few techniques and tips you can utilize to diagnose and fix these issues, before they get any worse.

1. Videotape your swing.

By far, if you need to know what is going wrong with your swing, the easiest way to tell is by videotaping it. Thanks to today’s little cameras, you won’t have to worry about lugging a big camera along with you on the course and you can immediately see what is going wrong. Have a friend videotape your swing at each hole and then you will be able to analyze what you may be doing wrong.

We recommend doing this at each hole since your swing can change dramatically as you play. Whether you end up getting tired and sloppy, or you start to warm up and improve, you’ll be able to pinpoint quite a few problems if you do this. We also recommend showing your video to a pro, or to a friend that is knowledgeable on the game. They may be able to spot something you’re not seeing.

2. Use a swing monitor.

Most courses are moving towards installing these monitors in their practice areas, and you should be able to find at least one in your local area that has one. These machines will help pinpoint the exact second where you start to go wrong and they are incredibly beneficial, especially to new players. If you have been struggling and just can’t get past the problem, this is the perfect solution.

Find a course that offers this and then pay for one lesson with the pro on staff. They’ll be able to help you interpret the results and find ways that you can improve your swing. It will cost a little money, but the amount of time you save and the results you can get will make it more than worth the expense.

3. Watch other players.

Make it a habit to watch other players on the course and on television and start analyzing their swings. As you become used to seeing different swings and the results they produce, you’ll be able to start incorporating some changes into your own game. This is a very helpful way to learn more about how a swing works and how to get big results from small changes.

4. Get some instructional DVDs.

If you can’t quite afford an instructor, you can get some DVDs that will show you how to perfect your swing, piece by piece. We highly recommend the The 8 Step Swing by Jim McLean
DVD series and the book. These two resources are packed with information and help for every golfer.

With a little time and by paying attention, you can fix your golf swing and get better results from your game.

Short Game Bible By Dave Pelz

Your short game is the key to a good score in golf. No matter how well you can drive, if you can’t chip or wedge your ball onto the right spot on the green, you’ll never be able to improve your score. Many golfers make the mistake of focusing on putting and driving, missing out on some key lessons that will actually make both easier over the long term. Whether you are having issues with your short game, or you are looking to shave a few points off your score, this book is an essential read.

The author did a great job of making the book readable by any golfer, regardless of their skill level. If you’re a rank beginner or an old pro, you’ll be able to understand absolutely everything discussed in this book. That’s no small feat given that the game can be full of confusing terminology and euphemisms. We found the author’s style to be very enjoyable and overall, this is a quick read that contains some hard hitting advice.

The first few chapters break down how golf is scored and the five different “games” that you’ll be playing. Since most golfers look at it as three games, ie: putting, driving and chipping, these chapters deserve more than just a once over. You’ll be learning just how much your short game can impact your entire score and the way that you play golf as a whole.

Next up are chapters that discuss bump and runs, the art of pitching properly and how to handle a wedge. We loved these chapters and found them to be incredibly informative and helpful. You never really realize how much you need a good short game until you break it down like this. The tips are incredibly worthwhile and should be suitable for everyone.

The author also covers how using the right club is vital for handling each situation that comes up. The chapter on equipment was eye-opening and explained quite a lot to us. We also loved the tips and tricks section and can’t wait to give each one a try the next time we are out on the course. By far, this is one of the best books we have ever read on the short game, and it deserves a high place of honor on any golfer’s book shelf.

We highly recommend this book to anyone that needs to improve their short game. It’s a quick read, but we still managed to pick up some vital tips that we could put right to you use on the course. By far, this is one of the best books on the subject and as we mentioned earlier, it’s perfect for any golfer, regardless of their skill level. If you have golfing buddies with a birthday coming up, this would make a great gift. We also recommend it for beginners so that they get the right foundation for the rest of their game.

How to Hit a Flop Shot

swingIf you have ever come up to short or too long on your approach to the green, it’s time to master the art of the flop shot. This is a shot that eludes many golfers, but once you’ve got it down, you will notice that your overall accuracy improves and you’ll be able to get a lot closer to the pin. Here are some tips to help you land that next flop shot.First, it’s important to realize that this shot is nothing like chipping. When you chip the ball, you’re trapping the ball. This gives you either more or less distance depending on how hard you hit it. A flop shot requires you to slide underneath the ball, not trap it. This is the number one problem for many golfers trying to land this shot. Once you have the difference down, you will be able to start making flop shots consistently.

Let’s talk about stance. Your stance will be much like a chip shot. Your knees should be slightly bent, and your arms slightly bent as well. Hold your club as you normally would, and backswing as you normally would. But, as you hit the downswing, the key is to slow down.

Think of it as an arc of power – much like the swing systems on most golfing video games. On the upper end of the swing, you want to give it as much power as you can. Right before you hit the ball, you want to slow that down to maximize the force. It takes a little getting used to at first.

We recommend practicing in your backyard, or even in your living room (without the ball of course) until you get the feel for the swing rhythm. You’re not actually going to be hitting anything yet, but the key is to get the feel for the swing. Once it comes naturally to you, you’ll be able to move onto the next step.

Now, let’s talk about your wrists. You’ll want to hold your hands normally on the upswing, but right when you hit the ball, the key to landing that flip shot is your wrists. This is one shot where you actually want to break your wrists. Imagine you are holding your club and clasp both hands together.

Keeping them together, move both hands sharply to the left, so that your left hand is now facing sideways and your right hand, which is on top, is also facing sideways. Both hands should be vertical. Now, put your arms down like you would if you were holding a club and get a feel for that same movement.

Add in the swing motion and at the last second, break your wrists. Keep going until all the pieces fit together. Then, you’ll be ready to add the ball. Remember, you want open the club face and slide underneath, not hit down. Ideally, your flop shot should pop up and land right where you want it. It takes a little practice, but with time, you’ll be flopping like a pro.
