Although there are plenty of books running around on the mind game of golf, few that we have found are this erudite or thought provoking. The author put 25 years of research into this book and it definitely shows. If you are looking for a book that dissects why golf is so hard and how you can start breaking through the mental blocks that keep your score from being where it should be, this is a terrific read.
Too many of the books in this genre delve into pop psychology and fail to live up to their claims. We found that this book by Cranford was a refreshing break from all of that. He looks at the game and its resulting mind games in a very analytic and thoughtful way. Gone are the pop-psy terms and in their place is some advice you can really take to heart, and more importantly, put into use.
The main audience for this book is the golfer that has reached that point in their game where they just can't seem to do any better. For whatever reason, their game has plateaued and they can't seem to break through that problem and get better scores. Most of us think that it's our swing or our technique, but it actually may be all in the mind according to Cranford.
By using the techniques and advice in this book, you can approach each tee with a whole different mindset. Chances are you are going to notice some big improvements right away. Instead of dreading your time at the course you may actually start to love the game again, and whenever a book can do that, it deserves a place of high honor on any golfer's bookshelf.
We found that the advice was incredibly practical and that you didn't need a degree in psychology to understand it. By addressing each problem logically, Cranford helps you work through that issue, both on and off the course. In fact, you may want to stick a copy in your golf bag for a quick refresher on the links. It's really that good!
Although there are plenty of books with similar titles that are nothing but hype, we believe that this title was well earned. These really are breakthrough secrets that every golfer needs to know, no matter how long they have been playing or how good they are. That's probably the best part of the entire book - it's versatility. Whether you are an occasional golfer that can't get past a certain portion of your game, or you are a seasoned pro that has the occasional hang up, there is advice right here that you can put to immediate use.
We didn't have a lot of hope going into this book, given the past failures we've read, but we must say that we were pleasantly surprised. We hope that this will not be Cranford's last contribution to the golfing community - it can sure use more of him.

For anyone who is unassociated with golf, it may seem absurd to have a need for fourteen different clubs that all appear to be similar to one another. Yet as you begin to play the game, you will begin to notice that each of these seemingly similar golf clubs actually has its own unique purposes, and instances where it is the ideal club compared to the others in your bag. Each of these unique golf clubs will come in handy rather frequently throughout your game play.
This will be a basic look at the most fundamental information that you could possibly want to know about golf clubs and their individual purposes. Once you have a better comprehension of the fundamental ideas behind each club, you can go on to begin to perfect your swing, winning an increasing number of games because you will be utilizing the right golf clubs for the right purposes.
The first golf club to understand is known as a wood.
These clubs are not crafted from wood, despite what their name may suggest. Woods are constructed from steel, titanium or some other vacuous type of metal. They have been configured in order to provide the best possible distance with every shot that you make. The woods represent less than fifty percent of the fourteen clubs in a regular set, and they are most commonly used on areas of the golf course that are long and flat because they provide excellent length with semi-decent exactness. If you want to keep a ball on a direct path using woods, however, some practice and skill will be necessary. Woods are easy to identify because they are the tallest clubs in your golf bag.
The next type of golf clubs is the iron, which is the club which is used most during a regular game.
These particular golf clubs are quite flexible in comparison to the other types of clubs, and for this reason, they tend to make up a larger number of the clubs found in your bag. They can also reach reasonably distant places, though not nearly the length that the woods can achieve. You are generally going to be able to achieve a much higher degree of exactness with these clubs, depending on which iron you employ of course. Some irons have very specific applications, so there are irons designed for most purposes such as getting the ball over an obstruction or sneaking out of a bunker.
The final golf club is the putter, which should only be required in singular form within your golf bag.
These are employed in the last part of the course, which is the putting green, as well as in other areas where fine spun exactness is absolutely required. These clubs are intended to give the smallest amount of length and the greatest amount of exactness. With a putter you can lightly tap a ball to send it into the hole at the very end of the course, but this is still the most crucial part of the golf game which is why having a decent putter and training with it is absolutely vital.

With the recent economic landscape, Tiger Woods and General Motors Corp. are participating in talks regarding the golfer's continued involvement in advertising the Buick past 2009. As a result of the failure of $15 billion in asset sales giving GM the safety net it wishes, GM is planning to proceed with a series of cost cuts. The endorsement deal was held with the golfer since 1999, and Buick has indicated that it does not wish to cut back on golf sponsorships. As a result of the economy, the company's stock dropped by three quarters, and GM has laid off 53,000 union workers.
The contract will expire in 2009, and there is discussion of whether it will make the most fiscal sense to renew the contract. Really, the talks are currently discussing the nature of the relationship between Woods and Buick, and talks directly relating to the possibility of renewal of the contract are not in the works. Buick has come out and said that there is no wish to sever ties with Tiger Woods, who carries a Buick logo upon his golf bag and appears in television and print ads.
For half a century, Buick had continued its involvement with golf and is the Official Car of the US PGA tour, through 2010. Buick is the largest sponsor of the PGA tour, and they have no plans on changing. But the recent problems on Wall Street have led experts to predict rough times ahead for the golf's top circuit. This is a problem that a lot of sponsors are facing, making sure that every dollar spent is utilized to its fullest. Many companies are looking for ways to save money. GM is planning to close down SUV assembly plants across the country because of the slowing of US sales of vehicles. At other plants, production will slow, affecting about 1500 workers.
Not even Tiger Woods is immune to the state of the economy, as advertising potential could dwindle. It is all about the viability of banks, making this a unique situation for the economic stability and viability within the job market as a whole. How much that Tiger Woods makes with Buick is confidential, but last year, Tiger made over 120 million dollars between golfing and commercial endorsements. Buick recognizes the need for advertising, and the value of pros like Tiger Woods in marketing brand names. The issue at hand is to ensure that advertising money is spent efficiently.
In the end, it will be likely that Tiger Woods and GM will continue their relationship without modification, although anything can happen. Advertising has always been and will always be a vital component of everything commercial, but what will likely happen is that money going into advertising will be cut back and more efficiently spent. For the golfing world, sponsors will start to cut back and it may make things tight for the PGA with tournaments and other sponsored events. Given the power behind professional golfers in advertising, corporate money will always be available; it is just the amount that will diminish.
Player Profile: Tiger Woods Tiger Woods may be out of commission for the 2008 season, but he is never really out of mind. When he first burst onto the scene and turned golf on its ear, no one really knew what to expect. This upstart kid went on to numerous championships, endorsement deals and......
