Roddy Ranch Golf Course, Antioch, CARoddy Ranch Golf Course is Located in: Antioch, CA

Website: http://www.roddyranch.com

Course History:

This course is part of the historic 2000 acre Roddy Ranch in Antioch, CA. This is a relatively new course that opened to tremendous accolades. It's already been named one of the best value courses in the bay area and with good reason. If you're looking for a challenging game of golf that won't break the bank, look no further. This course is a little off the beaten path, so we included some directions for you below.

What You Need to Know:

Don't let the prices fool you, this is a very nice course. Everything is top notch and its on the same level as many private clubs when it comes to amenities. You can register your tee time online or by phone. Their website also has a feature to let you pick your time and a special discount, so we recommend visiting before you book.

Lessons are offered every day of the week from the PGA pros on staff. These are also priced very reasonably and there is a special tee that is devoted entirely to practice. Numerous tournaments are held at the course every year and this is a great way to get a feel for the course before you actually head out.

Although the course does not specify a special dress code, we recommend traditional golf attire and soft spikes.

Playing Hints:

The holes are pretty straightforward at first glance, but look a little closer and you'll see the combination of heavily sloped greens, nasty rough, and sandtraps make for some challenging play. By far, the two hardest holes are the sixteenth hole with its blind green (approach from the right to avoid the bunkers) and the thirteenth hole that also features a blind green surrounded by bunkers. You'll be playing into the wind on this hole for an even bigger challenge.

The last two holes will give you a chance to salvage your score, especially the par 5 on 18. Just watch out for the remaining bunkers and you should do just fine.

Course Fees:

Standard Weekday $45.00

Weekday Twilight $35.00

Weekday Super Twilight $25.00

Standard Weekend $70.00

Weekend Mid-day $55.00

Weekend Twilight $45.00

Sandpiper Golf Course, Santa Barbara, CA

Website: http://www.sandpipergolf.com

Course History:

This beautiful course was designed by William Bell and first opened to the public in 1972. It quickly became one of the most popular courses in Santa Barbara and has been a top rated course for many years. Most recently, Golf Digest named it one of the top twenty five golf courses in the United States.

The course stretches out over 7000 yards and has a rating of 74.5. This is a championship level course that has hosted many PGA and LPGA players but novices should not find it terribly intimidating.

What You Need to Know:

Tee times can be registered online or by calling the number listed above. Please note that this is a soft spike facility. All metal spikes must be changed out before arriving on the course. There is a dress code at this course as well and the management asks that all players and spectators abide by it. For men, a collared shirt with sleeves must be worn. Slacks are preferred, but shorts are allowed as long as they are at least knee length and no shorter.

For women, collared shirts are a must, but the rules are a little more relaxed when it comes to sleeves. Tank tops are not allowed, but a sleeveless shirt may be worn so long as the shoulders are covered. Golf shorts and skirts are allowed, but must not be shorter than mid thigh. Denim is prohibited for both sexes.

Reservations are available but must be made up to 60 days in advance. Please be advised that the course does have a 48 hour cancellation policy. If you fail to cancel within that time period, you will lose your fee.

If it fits your schedule be sure to take advantage of the very reasonable weekday twilight and super twilight rates.

Playing Hints:

The beautiful course is alongside the ocean, but you won't have to worry too much about water hazards. The main trip up here are the numerous bunkers which can be found on every single hole. Most holes are straightforward, but quite long. The seventh hole is perhaps the toughest on the course. It features a sharp dogleg to the left and there is a nice big bunker in the middle of the fairway. It's best to keep to the center on this one and go a little short off the tee. From there, you'll have a clear view of the bunker and the curve.

The eighteenth hole features the one and only water hazard. You'll be shooting across a large lake to make it to the green, so give it a good one off the tee. Just make sure to avoid the bunkers around the green. With practice, you can easily birdie this hole to save your score.

Course History:

French Camp RV Resort and Golf Course is a great little place located in Manteca, CA. If you're planning an RV trip or you just want to change up your game a bit, this is a great course to try. It's well suited for most players and novices should have a great chance at a really good store. Pros won't find it terribly challenging, but it does offer a fun game and the area is particularly beautiful. The staff are very helpful and the whole resort has much to offer. It's a great place to take the kids on your next vacation, or a great place just to get away for the weekend.

What You Need to Know:

This is a very laid back course, so you won't have to worry about the dress code so much. The fees are very reasonable and their site offers specials, so we recommend checking that often. You can reserve your tee times by calling the number listed above. One of the best parts about the whole resort was the shuttle service that will take you right from the course to the café - and it's worth the trip. They have a great mix of good old comfort food and once again, the prices are very low.

The pro shop was surprisingly well stocked and had much to offer, and you should definitely stop at the resort gift store for even more great items. Overall, we found that this was truly an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. We would have liked to have stayed longer, and next time we plan to take the dog since they offer special dog runs to keep them busy while you're off having fun. A great little course in a terrific location.

Playing Hints:

This course isn't terribly difficult, but it is a lot of fun to play. Our favorite hole was the sixth hole which looked like it was going to be very easy and turned out to be a bit more of a challenge than we thought it would be. There are a lot of par threes on this course, so we recommend working on your short game and chip shots before you get here. You'll have plenty of chances to test your skills and they do offer a little practice area before you head out on the links.

Pine Mountain Lake Golf

Website: http://www.pinemountainlake.com

Course History:

This gorgeous course was designed by William Bell and has been rated as a top course by Golf Digest. One look and you'll know why it has received so many accolades. The area has more than 300 days of sun every year and the course offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. It's a bit hilly, so we do recommend taking advantage of a cart.

What You Need to Know:

There is a dress code at Pine Mountain. Men are asked to wear collared shirts and appropriate trousers. Denim pants or shorts, swim trunks and sweats are not allowed. For women, tank tops are not allowed, and if a shirt is sleeveless, it must have 4" wide straps. Denim pants and shorts are not allowed, but women may wear tee shirts on the course. In addition, short shorts are prohibited.

Tee times can be booked by calling the number listed above. We recommend reserving your slot a few days in advance since this is a popular course. Special guest rates are available, please check with the pro shop for more information.

Speaking of the pro shop it is very well stocked and the on site restaurant is fantastic. This is a terrific place to spend an afternoon. Lessons are available as well as special clinics throughout the year and the pros here are very helpful.

Playing Hints:

The holes here are very straightforward and the main issue are the trees. They line the fairways and in some cases, sit smack dab in the middle of the fairway. You'll really need to work on having long accurate drives to get under par at this course. The level of play is suitable for pros or novices and although it can take some time to maste the course, it is well worth it.

Black Lake Golf Course, Nipomo, CA

Website: http://www.blacklake.com/

Course History:

This course is actually three nine hole courses in one, so you'll have the rate opportunity of being able to change up your game. This is one of the few 27 hole courses in the area and it's well worth the drive. Most players prefer to start with their "Lakes and Canyons" layout and then move to the more difficult configurations after they get the hang of the course.

What You Need to Know:

Tee times can be registered online or by calling the number listed above. This is a busy course so we recommend reserving your time a few days in advance to make sure you get the slot you want. Numerous specials are posted on their website throughout the month, and you can save quite a bit on your green fees by taking advantage of them.

The bar and grill is open for lunch and also provides catering services. This is a great place to relax after a round of golf and the food is spectacular. The pro shop is well stocked and carries just about anything you could ever need. It's a great place for gift shopping for the golfers on your list.

Numerous tournaments are held here throughout the year and since this is a championship course, play can be a little difficult at times. However, most players find that it is just challenging enough without being terribly intimidating. The course does stipulate that no ice chests are allowed on the course and any alcoholic beverages on the course should be purchased through the bar and grill.

They do not specify a dress code, but traditional golf attire is the norm for both men and women. We also recommend soft spikes. You can get the full list of course rules from the pro shop.

Playing Hints:

Although there are numerous water hazards and bunkers to deal with, most of the holes are pretty straightforward. The Oaks course has the straightest fairways but they are a bit long. The Canyon course is a little more complicated and more compact. It features some great water hazards and the play here is challenging. You'll need to have a really good short game for many of these holes.

The Lakes course is challenging and although the holes are a bit short, you'll have plenty of chances to practice your chip shots and putting. The greens here are a bit fast according to some players, so you'll need to get some practice in ahead of time.

Alhambra Golf Course, Alhambra, CA

Alhambra Golf Course is located in: Alhambra, CA

Phone: (626) 570-5059

Website: www.alhambragolf.com

Course History:

Considered to be one of the best kept secrets in Southern California, Alhambra Golf Course offers a rare level of play at an incredible price. You’ll be able to play on this amazing course for less than $30 in most cases, and compared to other courses in the same area, that is definitely a steal. We haven’t come across a course this nice, or this cheap in a long time, so it was a definite treat to visit here.

The course is a bit short, coming in at just over 5200 yards, but they do have a regulation 70 par. It’s actually made up of two distinct nine hole courses, but if you choose to play both, you’ll find the experience quite fun.

What You Need to Know:

You can register your tee time by calling the number above and the course also has an online registration system. We highly recommend checking out the practice facility, which in keeping with how the course handles things, is incredibly valuable and offers some great chances to improve your game.

This is a public course, so the dress code is not as strict. We do however recommend soft spikes while you’re here. The pro shop is well stocked and we really enjoyed the grill. Considering that this is a municipal course, it completely exceeded our expectations.

Playing Hints:

This is a pretty straightforward course that is suitable for both novices and professionals. There are not a lot of hazards, but the terrain can be a bit challenging at times. There are two main water bodies, and they affect mainly the ninth and seventh holes, and slightly the second hole.

There are a few sand traps to avoid, but overall, this is a fun course to play and a great place to get in a solid practice round. Our favorite hole was the tenth hole. On this one, you’re going to want to go a little to the left on your drive in order to avoid the gigantic tree that is smack dab in the middle of the fairway. From there head a little right to make it on the green with your second shot.

Coyote Moon Golf Course, Lake Tahoe, CA

Website: http://www.golftahoe.com/coyote-moon

Course History:

Coyote Moon is a fairly new golf course but it has been incredibly well received and quickly shot to fame. Although it is one of the most difficult courses to master in this area, it is also one of the most enjoyable to play. Professionals will find it challenging, but even novices will be able to enjoy a round without feeling too intimidated. The scenery alone makes this well worth the trip and overall, this is one of the nicest courses in the area.

What You Need to Know:

This course is very eco-friendly and has numerous features that make it a very "green" course. There may be some areas that are parked off from the public and the management asks that visitors observe these rules. That's a small price to pay considering the overall beauty of the course.

Although no dress code is specified, we highly recommend traditional golf attire since this is a more conservative course. The facilities are definitely top notch and the grill is a definite must-stop-by. They are open every day for breakfast and lunch, and the bar is open until 7pm.

Playing Hints:

The terrain makes for a very challenging round of golf and the management states that you'll need to use just about every club and every technique at your disposal to beat this course. It's definitely one of the toughest courses to play and you'll find that distance combined with accuracy will make your game a lot easier and will keep your scores higher.

The sixth hole is particularly challenging and you'll be facing a water hazard right from the tee. Keep to the left a little bit and keep in mind that your shot will be pulled towards the water. On the fourteenth hole you may feel as though you're playing hopscotch, not golf, as you try to avoid the rough. Try to make your tee shot as long as possible and head straight. This should put you in a great position to make it to the green in about another shot with the right club and the right amount of power.

Sierra Meadows Golf Course, Ahwahnee, CA

Website: http://www.sierrameadows.com

Course History:

Sierra Meadows has long been considered one of the most beautiful golf courses in California and with good reason. The fairways are lined with enormous oaks and the overall feel is very tranquil. The course recently underwent a multimillion dollar makeover and the fairways and greens were all rebuilt. This course has a reputation of being suitable for novice players while still being challenging enough for professionals.

What You Need to Know:

You can book your tee time online or by calling the number above. They frequently run specials on their site so we recommend checking there before you book your time to take advantage of them. However, this is a very economical course even without discounts.

The pro shop is stocked incredibly well and features gifts and merchandise for all golfers. The on-site restaurant is one of the best in the area and is open for lunch every day. It is frequently booked for private events and they are known for their delicious soups and sandwiches.

Although the course does not specifically state that there is a dress code, we recommend traditional golf attire. It is also best to change out any metal spikes for soft ones, since most of the courses in this area do have a soft spike rule. Lessons are available from the resident pro and are reasonably priced.

Playing Hints:

This is a terrific course that offers enough of a challenge without being terribly intimidating. The first hole gets you started off right with a severe dogleg. We recommend keeping to the right. Watch out for their signature oak tree in the middle of the fairway at the curve.

The fifth hole is known as their signature hole and it is a challenging par three. You'll be playing across the water so try to hit a long tee shot to make the green in one. However, be careful of the bunkers that surround the green.

The tenth hole will take a while to master. It has a slight dogleg, but danger is present on all sides. Go too far to the right and you'll end up out of bounds. Too far to the left and you'll end up in the creek. We recommend playing this one conservatively until you get the hang of it.

The sixteenth hole also features a hazard that runs the entire left side of the fairway. You'll need to drive a little bit right of center to avoid it. Keep in mind that there are some severe bunkers around the green. It's the perfect spot to work on your chip shots.

Rancho San Marcus Golf Course, Santa Barbara, CA

Rancho San Marcus Golf Course, Santa Barbara, CA

Phone: 877-RSM-1804

Website: http://www.rsm1804.com

Course History:

Robert Trent Jones designed this idyllic course and it was later renovated by its current owner, Ty Warner. This is an award winning course that has many distinctions and has been honored by Golf Inc. Magazine. It is easy to see what all the hubbub is about - this is one course that is absolutely magnificent. You'll feel as though you've been transported to a whole different world while you're here.

What You Need to Know:

Please note that this is a soft spike facility. The course management asks that all players change out their spikes before arriving. In addition, there is a dress code that all players must observe. For the men, collared shirts and slacks are best, but shorts may be worn as long as they are no shorter than mid thigh. For the women, collared shirts are a must, but they can be sleeveless. Shorts and skirt may be worn so long as they are not shorter than mid thigh in length. Denim is strictly prohibited for all players.

The pro shop is terrific and players of all ages will appreciate the club house. Overall, the amenities, coupled with the amazing views make this one of the best courses in the region. This is definitely a course to add to your list of "must play's." The practice facility is extremely large and is located in the middle of the course. You'll have plenty of room to work on your drives and putts (both necessary) before you head out to the course.

Playing Hints:

The holes here are pretty straightforward and you won't have to deal with too many water hazards or bunkers. The main issue with this course are the hills and the greens. Jones commented that they were some of the best he had ever built, so you'll definitely want to work on your short game before you arrive.

The key to playing this course successfully is a long drive. You won't have to worry so much about placement on most of the holes, just try to keep to the center of the fairway. The longer you can drive the better your scores are going to be. However, as mentioned above, don't forget your short game either. The greens at this course look a sea that has suddenly been frozen in mid wave, and it's going to take a lot of accuracy to keep your score low.

The rough here is extremely rough and you may feel as though you're here in the old days when grizzly bears called this their home. You'll need to really make sure you keep out of there since they can quickly turn a good game into a complete and total nightmare. We do highly recommend renting a cart for this course to make it easier.

Course History:

This beautiful mountain course is tucked away but it is well worth the trip. We've included directions below on how to reach this course, since it is a bit hard to find. It's well known among the locals as being one of the most beautiful courses in the area. Lined with majestic trees, the natural setting is simply tremendous and offers a great backdrop for this challenging but fun course.

What You Need to Know:

You can reserve your tee time by calling the number listed above or by reserving them online. We do recommend checking their website for specials before you call since they do list them frequently. They also offer a player's club that offers special emailed discounts and coupons. If you plan on playing here frequently, we highly recommend signing up. However, the regular fees are quite reasonable, even without discounts.

The course management does not specify a dress code, but we recommend traditional golf attire. The pro shop was well stocked and we enjoyed our time in the Meadows Restaurant after our round. They serve breakfast and lunch seven days a week as well as dinner four nights a week. Wednesday nights are all you can eat pasta nights, and it's a lot of fun for the whole family.

Playing Hints:

This is actually a pretty challenging course, thanks to the natural terrain. Right off the bat, you'll be dealing with a creek on the first hole. You're either going to have to hit it really hard off the tee or go a bit short to avoid it. Watch out for the 4th hole, since it is quite deceptive. Most of it is downhill, so you'll want to avoid over hitting your approach shot to avoid missing the green entirely.

The 6th hole is quite a challenge. You'll need to stay as far to the right as possible, since the fairway has a big slope to the left. It's tough to overcome once you're down there, so really do all that you can to keep to the right. The 15th hole is the true test on this course however. The fairway is completely lined with trees and it's all uphill, even the green is elevated.
