Book Review: World Atlas of Golf - The Greatest Courses and How They are Played Mark Rowlinson

The World Atlas of Golf was first published more than 30 years ago, and since then, each and every addition has revealed to golfers the best courses available. This latest edition gives the fully informative treatment to over 70 courses, giving the treatment to courses that have not yet graced the pages of the World Atlas of Golf. The text provides a colorful history of golf alongside the numerous courses and brilliant, revised computer renditions of the courses and their cut aways. Each course layout is clearly illustrated, with tips for the difficult holes and the history of the game as it was located on each green. Tips are provided for making the more difficult shots, along with the truly difficult shots made by the professional players. The book also provides its readers a expose on golf course development and design, describing what goes into the creation of a golf course.

For those players whom have played the courses described in this tome, they will find a strong sense of remembrance as they relive playing through each course, stroke for stroke. Others will find enjoyment in the telling of the history behind the holes and of the game itself. Still others will enjoy the descriptions of the hardest holes and learn why certain holes have received the acclaim and rave reviews from other golfers. A golfer will not easily finish this book, as it is quite the significant tome with numerous references to famous championship matches. The tips that are provided also contribute to making the tome a valuable resource for golfers.

The selection of courses drawn from mostly the United States and Europe, but there are courses from all over the globe. Included are golfing standards, such as the St. Andrews's Old Course, The Country Club, Medinah, and numerous others. There are also new courses described, one of which is the hidden gem of the Dominican Republic, the Casa De Campo golf course. Each of the courses receive a hole by hole analysis, including the nicknames, famous holes, trick shots and tips that will help you improve your game.

This atlas is a handbook which will give you the extra knowledge you need to take on the more difficult challenges that were solved by the greats. These shots are those which made history for the players. When you work to try and match those shots, even if you fail, you will take home much more in the way of satisfaction and experience.

This tome is a valuable book to anyone who enjoys the game of golf. Beginners will find plenty of tips and techniques for making those seemingly impossible shots as well as setting up and clearing the hole. Experts and seasoned players will learn more about the subtleties behind each stroke, and behind the world's greatest golf courses.

Tokatee Golf Course, McKenzie Bridge, OR

Website: http://www.tokatee.com/

Course History:

The name Tokatee means, "Place of Restful Beauty," and there are few places on earth that embody this phrase as closely as this course does. This is a rare course that was inspired and built by the nearby residents and they shaped a course that has gone down in history as a favorite among pros and novices alike.

What You Need to Know:

You can register your tee time using their online system or by calling the number listed above. They do offer frequent specials on their website, and you can even get a free round of golf, so we highly recommend stopping by there first before you call.

This is a family run course and we found it to be very relaxed and laid back. You won't have to worry too much about dress code here, but we still recommend a nice sleeved shirt and shorts. Denim is pretty much frowned on, even at public courses, so it's best to leave that at home.

The Pro Shop is simply terrific and offers a wide selection, as well as a very cute little coffee shop, lessons and a whole lot more. The catering service onsite is terrific and we loved the box lunches you can take out on the course. If you prefer to eat in, they've got a great menu with traditional, good Old American food like hamburgers, hot dogs and everything else you'd expect from a great family place like this.

Playing Hints:

While this is a fun course, don't let it fool you. It can get pretty difficult at times. However, even novices can master it with a little practice and pros find it still challenging enough to offer them a very good game.

The course layout is pretty straightforward, but accuracy is still key to getting par here. Watch out for the numerous bunkers that are filled with White Idaho sand - they are incredibly tricky. The fourteenth hole is one of the biggest challenges on the course. As you approach the green, make sure you don't overhit the ball. There's a big lake just waiting on the other side and it is notorious for pulling your ball right in.
