This week’s golf tournament was the last tune up before the U.S Open, bringing in a strong field and strong play. Eight of the top 20 ranked golfers made their way through the course at TPC Southwind. Players included Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Rory McIlroy, Robert Allenby, Padraig Harrington, Camilo Villegas, Zach Johnson, and Retief Goosen. The players are ranked third, sixth, 10th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th, respectively. Former winners Brian Gay and David Toms were also in the field.
Lee Westwood grabbed a quick lead in the first round, shooting a 7-under 63. This was his best round on the PGA tour. The suspended first round saw scores of 64 from Casey Wittenberg and 65 from Padraig Harrington. Lightning brought play to a halt, bringing difficult weather conditions for the players who had yet to tee off. Teeing off in the afternoon, Brian Gay shot a first round 73.
Garret Willis moved up the leaderboard to tie Lee Westwood in the second round.
Westwood birdied his final three holes to post a second round 68, with Willis posting a 65. John Daly managed to make the cut of the St. Jude Classic with a combined two-day score of 1 over. Players failing to make the cut included Stuart Appleby and Ian Poulter.
Saturday brought some interesting twists and turns as Robert Garrigus took over the lead. Garrigus shot a 4-under 66 to pull two ahead of his closes competition. Lee Westwood dropped to three-back after shooting a 71. Other players within striking distance of the lead were Robert Karlsson, Shaun Micheel, Tim Petrovic, and Lee Janzen. The tour cut 10 players after the third round to bring the field down to 71 players.
The final on Sunday was exciting to say the least, as three players made it to a sudden-death playoff. Garrigus lost his three stroke lead as he struggled on the final hole. His triple bogey on the 18th brought about the playoff between himself, Robert Karlsson, and Lee Westwood. Garrigus was dropped after the first playoff hole, posting a bogey as the other players posted pars. Lee Westwood finally managed to pull out the win on the fourth hole, as the players trekked to the 18th hole. Westwood is the first European player to win the tournament, one of the most storied tournaments in the PGA tour. The St. Jude Classic is the third-oldest tournament in the tour.
Westwood and the rest of the field look toward the US open, teeing off later in the week. Some three-person pairings to note include: Woods/Westwood/Els, Clark/Choi/Weir, Goosen/Furyk/Cabrera, and Mickelson/Harrington/Yang. Vijay Singh, working to improve his ranking after receiving a bid to the open will play his first two rounds with Dustin Johnson and Davis Love III.
