The final round of the St. Jude Classic, presented by FexEx, was delayed for a total of four hours because of some unexpected rain. The fourth round began finally at 11 o'clock am, with players who were separated into groups of three going off of both tee 1 and tee 10. Here are some highlights from the final round of the St. Jude Classic, presented by FexEx:
- * Brian Gay took a five stroke victory, which was his second 2009 win and his third victory during the PGA tour. He took 500 FedEx Cup points with this win, and is now in fourth place in the over all standings.
- * The only other players who have earned wire to wire victories in addition to Brian Gay are Justin Leonard from 2005, Bob Estes from 2001 and Dave Hill from 1967.
- * This is Gay's second victory out of his last five starts, and this victory will qualify him for the United States Open Championship which will be held this upcoming week. He is now the fifth player that has a pair of victories in the 2009 season, joining the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Zach Johnson and Geoff Ogilvy.
- * Gay managed to have no victories during his first 292 PGA tour career events, though he has won three times in the last 42 PGA tour events including this second win of the 2009 series which is allowing him to move on to the U.S. Open tournament next week.
- * This victory is marking the eleventh consecutive year in a row that the St. Jude classic has been won by a golfer from the United States.
- * Gay is the player with the most PGA Tour starts out of any player since the year 2000, as he has a total of 307 start.
- * No player who has ever won the week prior has ever gone on to win in the US Open tournament.
- * The five stroke win that Gay took in the St. Jude classic matches the third largest victory margin in the entire history of the tournament. The largest margin is 7 strokes, held by John Cook. The second largest margin, 6 strokes is held by Raymond Floyd and David Toms. Brian Gay shares the 5 stroke margin with Woody Austin, Gene Littler, Cary Middlecoff and Bert Yancey.
- * The final round 66 that Gay ended with makes his scoring average a whopping 68.75, moving him into second place and ahead of Tiger Woods for this golf season. Tiger Woods has a current average of 68.80 right now. The number one spot goes to Rory Sabbatini with a 68.30.
- * The tournament's final round scoring average was 69.88, which was the lowest since 1999. The score in 1999 was 69.70. The overall scoring average for the week was 70.29, which was the lowest since 2002 where the scoring average for the week was 70.198. The scoring average in 2008 was a full two strokes higher at 72.534.
