Slocum has managed to finally make a name for himself after capturing the win at Barclays, the first PGA tour playoffs for the season.
Heath Slocum surprised all, because he barely managed to qualify for the Barclays, and yet he managed to emerge from a crowded pack of players yesterday. He surprised all when he holed a 22 foot putt for par at the 18th hole while playing at the Liberty National Golf Club, allowing him to shoot a total of 4-under-par for a 67, winning the first of four important playoff events. He managed to win by a single shot over Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker, Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington.
Slocum is quoted as saying that it has been an incredible day and an incredible week. He took a playoff event that he was barely qualifying for and managed to turn it into a tremendous win. He says that this is an experience that he is definitely going to take with him, an experience that he is going to use for the rest of his life to remind himself that he can come down this stretch and play among the big boys.
Slocum was not the only winner, but he was the one that took home a $1.35 million dollar check, making the biggest possible move up the points list for the FedEx Cup championship. He jumped from the World No.124 spot to the World No.3 spot that quickly. This was his third victory in the PGA Tour overall, and it guaranteed him a spot in the upcoming Deutsche Bank Championship, an event that is only reserved for the top 100 players in the world.
This week, Troy Matteson, Richard S. Johnson and Fredrik Jacobson all also found themselves outside of the top 100, but they managed to finish the Barclays inside of the number, meaning that they will be joining Heath Slocum at the next event, which will be held at TPC Boston. Matteson had the longest of all ways to go, beginning at 125th in the world, but he took a 20th place tie that left him in place No.83 on the list of points, allowing him to climb into the next tournament.
There were a few heartaches this week as well, however. Bill Lunde, for example, was safely inside the top 100 players up until his final round 76 dropped him down to No. 107. Chris Riley was 119th at the beginning of the week, but by the 18th hole he had been projected to finish as No. 98. Unfortunately, he missed his par putt and ended up finishing at 103rd. He declined an interview following his round, because he did not have what it took to finish the 18th hole in the top 100.
