Love it

Reviewer: Timothy P. Seegel,
I have had my Sky Caddie for Three years and bought thru Amazon.I love it. I have not had trouble with the connecting devise and have been using it daily in season. The range finder is pretty close, and sometimes are right on and the markers in the course are wrong. Besides the annual fee, I love the SG4. I have up-graged to more features this year. The company has also fixed a few glitches in the system, and also gave a couple of months for the inconvenience. I now but the SG4 for a grand prize for the outings I do. GET ONE, you will like it too......Tim Seegel

I bought two of these recently, one for a friend. Was out playing the other day with him and another guy. We all had different sky caddies, the 2.5, the 4 and the 5. They all agreed with each other all the time, they were extremely accurate and brilliantly mapped. The only difficulty with the SG4 is, why oh why do they have that awful connecting lead. Beware and do not overtighten the little grub-screw. What was wrong with the standard USB connector on the 2.5 and 5. Also, a little tip. If you fit the connecting lead upside down you can charge the unit via a USB port. Found that out by accident. All in all, brilliant piece of equipment, awful connector. The new software and features on skygolf make this a great value, older type system with all modern bells and whistles

I already had one but needed another because I have twin junior golfers. The unit works great and was bought at a great price as it is now a discontinued model. The main problems I have had with my older unit that has been used a lot: one of the buttons is hard to push and the rubber around the little joystick wore through exposing a not-so-smooth end of the joystick (bad design!). They changed the stick to a flat golf ball-like disk on later models. I like the large screen.
SG4 Connector

Skycaddie SG4

A great piece of kit and would have a 5 star if it were not for the connector.

However, all is not lost if you are just a little bit handy.

You will only need a drill bit the size of the shoulder on the attachment screw (6mm).

First remove the screw from the connector (it will screw completely out with a gentle pulling) and then very very very carefully countersink the hole in the back of the connector to the depth of the shoulder of the screw (about 1.5mm). Keep trying for depth after a little way rather than trying to drill it in one. Now the screw will go that extra distance to fix it securely to the back of the device. Simples!!!! And much quicker than sending it back - 5 minutes tops including looking for the drill bit. For those not too skilled with an electric drill try to put it on a slow setting.

But the risk is yours.
Bad Design and Bad Support

I have been using my skycaddie for two seasons. Last month the plug would not screw into the unit and I couldn't charge it. I called tech support and they said that I could either send it back and they would replace it or apply scotch tape to hold the plug in. I opted to send it in. They received it 8/8/08 and as of today 9/5/08 I have not heard from the company. They say I just have to wait my turn. Bad support  and bad design. The connection should not be a small screw that can strip easily. They should consider a re-design with a USB plug. I have found the unit helpful but on our course there are about 4 holes where the distances are 10-15 yards off and the unit occasionally freezes forcing me to reset it by opening the back and removing the battery.
Works Great Most of the Time; Customer Support Nil

I go middle-of-the-road on the SG4. When it works (and that is most of the time), I love it. Not the latest technology, but the information is solid. But, if it doesn't work, then don't expect help from Skygolf. Here are the weak points: Poor Battery Life; Infrequent Problem Obtaining Satelites (Must reset GPS); Flimsy connection cord (I've broken two and had to replace); Before expiration of annual contract, they will shut you down (forces you to renew to be able to use up to the last day of your previous contractual obligation). And the strong points: Plenty of yardage information available (green, hazards, end of fairway, etc.); Easy to use (once you've used it a while). Would I buy another Skygolf product? Not likely; they just don't seem to care. You are certainly not treated with respect as a customer. As long as this works, I'm fine. If it quits, I'm off to try another company's product.

Sky caddie seems to have more trouble than other models connecting to satalites. Also, charger interface is more troublesome that it should be. Easy to cross thread the small screw for charbing. Customer service has been helpfull but the wait time has been excesive.
Great Product, Poor Design, No Customer Support

Reviewer: Mark Fragiao,
Great product. Terrible customer service and manufacturing design/quality. I recently had a power connector problem. On the SG4 unit it has a screw-in connector on the USB power cable. It ends up getting stripped out on the inserted nut on the unit due to the lack of threads on the cable side. So, I send an email to Skycaddie, 2 days later, the reply tells me to call Cust. Serv/ Tech Support for an RMA number and to see if there is an other technical issues. My first call was 15 mins, I hung up, had to do something. My second call, I stay on the phone waiting another 28 mins, while chatting with a Cust. Support person. They told me to continue to hold for the next rep. I told him to just pickup the phone and call me, he couldn't that is a different department. Man, talk about fustration. As a Mech. Engr. I end up pulling the nut out of the back of the unit and flipping up side down, using the other end and re-inserting/pressing back into the unit. It will work until it strips out this end. Anyway, don't buy a Skycaddie unit unless you are prepared to treat it as a disposible electronic device. hehe Aloha, Mark
Skycaddie SG4 not that great!

Purchased the unit for my wife (and occasionaly myself). She is an accomplished golfer and really wanted a GPS unit.

Although the unit does an adequate job of finding yardage and the other things that one expects from such a unit, the cable connection for charging and downloading new courses is the worst engineered that I have seen. It is cumbersome to connect; if you happen to be an older golfer or have difficulties using your fingers for fine work I don't know how you would manage it.

And to make matters worse, the cable has either failed or become damaged. After trying to get some assistance from their customer "lack of service" department, all I got was a simple email directing me to their website for instructions on how to connect the thing. I had previously told them that I had spent over an hour on their site trying everything that was printed. Now, a week later after being unable to download a new course my wife played, we are seriously considering trying to sell the thing and buy a competetive product.

Hey Skycaddie! Figure it out. A little customer service might save you some customers!
Great device when it finally / if ever gets satellite signal

Review Date: February 1, 2009
Reviewer: Robert Booher, Washington State
When the SG 4 finally locks onto signal this is a fantastic golf aid. But I have found in the Pacific NW that it has trouble locking onto the satellites and seems to be worse when it is cloudy out. I have had to reset the GPS on many different occasions before it will lock on and on some occasions that does not even work. I have started it prior to while I was on the practice green hoping that the extra time would allow it to lock on to a couple of good signals, this is hit or miss. I may have a bad version but the lack of support from SkyGolf has been an issue. I would look at other vendors before SkyCaddie in the future.
When it works it's great

All the reviews seem to be accurate. When it works it's great. Problem is between the difficulty doing setup, then the resets etc it's not a solid product for the $200-$300. I just downloaded a software update last month. Hoping there are some improvements. Also, understand you have to pay the membership fee every year or the downloaded courses will deactivate. Not sure if other golf GPS companies work like that or not. I think Garmin has a less expensive membership fee.
Fine when it works

I bought this in Dec 2007. When it works, it's great to have on the course. But I have had problems with it.
1) The cable that you charge it with and use to synch with your PC to download courses is difficult to attach. You have to work at it.
2) Initially, I often had trouble getting it to connect up with satellites and give me a reading on the course. Then suddenly, on, say Hole 13, it would come to life. This problem seemed to happen on cloudy days. However, earlier this year (2009), SkyGolf came forth with a software upgrade that improved performance remarkably. I no longer have this problem.
3) Now the device isn't recognized by my PC and SkyGolf says I must send it in for repair at a cost of $35-$100. It cost over $300 to buy in the first place and I must pay $30 a year to download courses. To have it malfunction after a year and a half and have to pay up to $100 to fix it just seems a bit much.
If I were going to buy a similar device today, I think I'd look around for a less expensive, more reliable device.
UPDATE July 2010: Though SkyGolf told me I'd have to pay up to $100 to get it fixed, in fact, they charged me nothing for fixing it. So I would consider that to be excellent customer service. (I believe that the problem was caused by one of their software updates, so it is appropriate that they did not charge me anything.)
Now my battery has worn out, so I am considering whether to buy a $40 replacement battery and re-up on the annual subscription fee or whether to abandon the SG4 altogether and buy a different gps unit without the annual fee. Based on my experience with the SG4 so far, I'd probably give it 3 stars.
Great Price Bad Design Excellelnt customer service

Must agree with most, very bad power cable design. That being said. The SG4 I have works great, have had no problems with GPS issues for 3 years. The threads did strip on the adapter screw, contacted the company, they were very helpful, did have to pay for shipping, but that was all. Received product back in approx 3 weeks. No problem since I live in the UP of MI and didn't need to use the product. I've been using for the last 4 1/2 months with no problems. So if you want to gamble on the poor power design, the product is a great buy.

Update, also upgraded product and had problems with computer recognizing device. Contacted customer service who were extremely helpful. Walked me through several questions. When connecting the cable to the device the cord must run down on the back of unit before the computer will recognize. Once I did that no problems with computer or downloading courses or the new program upgrade. Hope this was helpful.
No support if it does not work

Purchased May 08. When connecting out of the box, the web site wanted to upgrade hand held device (which is a normal process). The update crashed leaving me with an inoperable device and the website not recognizing the device anymore. (Check web search and you will see this is a common problem). I spent two weeks trying to contact customer service at skygolf, but over 6 emails went unanswered and phone calls (and long holds) offered no solution. I am stuck with a device that never worked and no customer service from skygolf or amazon.

Don't buy SkyCaddie or other SkyGolf Product!

I am on a quest to warn people about SkyGolf / SkyCaddie. I bought an SG4 mainly because of the SD RAM expansion slot which I have several adds saved where it is promised that this slot allows you to save more courses; LIE, the slot does nothing, never did.I have called SkyCaddie about this many times and have been promised a solution over and over. At this point it is too late, there are way too many better technologies on the market. On top of it all I had a terrible time finding and maintaining satellite connections.

uPro is the unit I like best and, after I purchased it, I sent them an e-mail support question and they got back with me within 24 hours - ON A SUNDAY! I waited for weeks and never received promised call-backs from SkyGolf. Their customer support is a joke; I suspect that their business model will not be sustainable since they will soon not be able to charge people $30.00 a year. I believe that this puts SkyGolf at risk of going out of business as their business model requires that people continue to be willing to pay this outrageous fee.

I have never used the GolfBuddy, but plan to buy one soon for traveling as it has 20,000 courses pre-loaded. There are others, such as iGolf, which are far less expensive than the SkyCaddie.

I think that SkyGolf thought that their IntelliGreen patents would give them a sustainable advantage; fortunately uPro has blown that technology out of the water. In short, SkyGolf was early, but is not the technology leader , pricing leader or customer service leader (in fact I have rarely, if ever, dealt with a company with worse customer service).

BTW, if anyone wants a used SG4 for Cheap, I got one that will be selling used
Don't buy from this company

This gps worked well for 2 yrs. This year it wouldn't sync with the computer. It has been sent back twice (starting in April) and I still don't have it working (June). Customer service and support is abominable from this company. I suggest trying a different company.
Poor power connection design

Review Date: April 20, 2009
Reviewer: Marsha, Southern California
The threaded power cord connection is poorly designed on the GS4. In time the female threads on the port become stripped. Skycaddie wants between $35 and $100 to return the product for repair. They were not interested in my suggestion that the company back a poorly designed product by covering this defect under warranty. i have found that their customer serve is lacking.
SkyCaddie Hell

I am finised with this product. Although adequate on course, it is impossible to download courses in less than an hour. It should be the poster child for computer hell. I would rather have the yips than be forced into another session of updating my software and downloading a course. Do not buy this product.
Beware: SkyCaddie SG4

Review Date: August 25, 2008
Reviewer: C. Hall, Duluth, GA USA
Interestingly, my unit stopped being able to direct connect around the same time my subscription expired.

Like many other reviews that one can find on the net, I am unable to direct connect. I've tried using friend's SG4 cables, other USB ports that do work with different peripherals, different computers, uninstalled and reinstalled the software and drivers, updated all IE patches and still no joy.

After speaking with three different customer no-support representatives on three different occassions, I must say that their "help" is universally worthless. The script they work from consists of about four basic questions which all lead to the same conclusion: send in the unit to see if it can be repaired (for a diagnostic fee of course).

It is very difficult to believe that with the number of others out there who have described this same problem and how smart they are, that someone hasn't figured out why the direct connect is not working and how to fix it.

I cannot say that I was so satisfied with this unit and the cost of a subscription for a year that I would go out and buy another one. Over $400 for one year of yardage info is a tough nut.
worst imaginable service

Have the SG4. Company's service is unbelievably terrible. New software won't load and there is literally no customer service. No one picks up the phone- no one responds to email. My unit is now in the trash. DO NOT BUY.
