At the Sony Open, Ryan Palmer won with -15, edging out Robert Allenby at -14, and Steve Stricker who came in 3rd place at -14. Palmer stayed on top each day of the tournament, and had some worrying moments when Allenby and Stricker each eventually tied him for the lead. But thanks to a chip shot at the 18th hole, Palmer walked away from the Open with prize money of $990,000.
The shot Palmer made was from 50-feet away from the green, and amazingly it hit the pin and didn't go more than few inches from the hole. An easy putt gave him the birdie and 4-under 66. A missed 10-foot putt by Allenby helped Palmer win the Open by one shot. The 18th hole proved to be a problem for Stricker. He hit the ball into a bunker and the shot from there went 20-feet past the hole. Then his birdie putt only skirted the edge of the hole without going in.
Robert Allenby, had he won here at the Waialae Country Club in Hawaii, would have won 3 tournaments in 3 tours and been the first to do it, but ended the tourney with a 67. The 4th hole gave him problems with a 3-putt, and on the 5th hole he went through the green. The chip shot bypassed the hole by about 15-feet, at which point Allenby kicked the ground, clearly aggravated. The par putt went in.
Allenby caught up with Palmer on the 15th hole, tying him, after Palmer bogeyed at the 11th and 13th, both bunker shots. For most of the tournament, it was clear it was a 3-man race between Palmer, Allenby and Stricker, and they shared the lead and bounced it around a few times during the last several holes. This was Palmer's 3rd PGA Championship.
Retief Goosen, 2-time US Open champion, seemed slated to finish in the top 2 or 3 until Stricker pulled ahead, pushing Goosen down to 4th place. On the 9th green, Stricker birdied and then a set of excellent shots on the 10th hole put him at 12 under, matching Goosen. Stricker, who finished second, missed chances on the 12th hole and the 14th hole, with the latter only an 8-foot putt that he didn't get in. The 13th hold put him in a tie for first place that lasted only a short while, but then a 25-foot birdie on the 17th hole made it seem he could pull and stay ahead.
Still, Goosen, who turned 40 last year, could be showing for a better year in 2010 than last's years disappointments. He didn't make the Masters last year and managed disappointing finishes at the US Open and the PGA Championship, and came in 5th at the Open Championship. Despite coming in 4th in Hawaii this year, he did make 12 of 14 of his fairway shots, and 16 out of 18 greens.
Charles Howell III tied for 5th place with Carl Petterson and Davis Love III.
