Here is a look at the play by play and some of the highlights of the fourth round of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Championship!
Chad Campbell unfortunately came up empty for the third time in his career during a playoff on Sunday while golfing in Las Vegas.
Finally we have a real winner for this championship, at 8:23pm it was announced that Martin Laird was the winner following an approach shot while on the 18th hole that stopped only 11 feet from the hole. It may have taken him two strokes in order to get the ball in the hole, but that was enough for him to take the first victory in his career this past Sunday while playing in Las Vegas.
Why was this enough? George McNeill was barely able to stay out of the water during his approach. He had to lose both his socks and his shoes to have a stance in the water so that he could hit his third, but this shot landed well enough away from the hole that he had to set up a two putt bogey.
This win for Martin Laird is moving him up into the top 125 as far as the money list goes. This is actually irrelevant since the victory that he just took is netting him a two year long exemption. This is definitely not a bad way for any player to walk away from Las Vegas.
What made this tournament so unique was that at the end, the two players that were pretty much going head to head were Martin Laird and George McNeill, and neither of these players has had a win so far in their career. Neither player was hitting very good during the 18th hole, which was the third hole in this showdown, which was a sudden death to the finish kind of match. Both players at about 8:10 pm were in the rough, and at that point they were simply hoping for par. Luckily, all that mattered at that point was getting the ball in the hole.
This entire championship was truly unique, especially by the point thing went into overtime and it was known that no matter how the tournament ended at that point, the winning player was going to be taking home their first ever career win, which is a serious achievement considering the pool of players that walked into this one. When George McNeill and Martin Laird went head to head in the sudden death match, it was anyone's guess as to who was going to win. After nearly an hour of head to head play, however, Martin Laird managed to take the win by besting George McNeill who struggled with water hazards on the 18th hole.
