This week in golf featured the RBC Canadian Open, held at St. George’s G&CC in Etobicoke, Ontario. The field was a mix of both up-comers and veterans, including Trevor Immelman, Matt Kuchar, David Duval, Stuart Appleby, Ricky Barnes, John Daly, Scott Verplank, and Mike Weir.
The national championship of Canada saw a somewhat impressive and unexpected first round leader. Brent Delahoussaye fired an impressive 8-under 62 in the first round, trying the Canadian Open record. Delahoussaye wound up two shots ahead of Vance Veazey and Brock Mackenzie. There were some players who struggled, with Mike Weir shooting a 72 and John Daly shooting a 69.
Delahoussaye struggled on his second round of play, firing a 69 to wind up in second place after the cut. Dean Wilson hit a 65 to match his first round 65 to go into the clubhouse with a 10-under. Tim Clark tied his 2-day score to grab his share of the lead. Mike Weir struggled once again, missing the cut with a second-round 74. Other players missing the cut included Scott Verplank (140) and Fred Couples (144).
Dean Wilson continued his run in the third round, shooting yet another 65 to take a four-stroke lead heading into the fourth round. Carl Pettersson managed to break Delahoussaye’s record, firing a 10-under 60 to rocket himself toward the top of the leaderboard. Pettersson nearly missed the cut after he fired a 71 and 68 in his first two rounds. John Daly was among the five players who were unlucky enough to be cut after the third round. Daly shot a 69, 70, and 72 during his three rounds, ending up 1 over par.
The fourth round saw some interesting play, as Carl Pettersson fired a 67 to take the tournament with a 14-under 266. Pettersson netted over $900,000 for his fourth PGA Tour Win of his career. His come-from-behind victory overtook Dean Wilson, who shot a 72 after his long string of 5-under 65s to finish with a 13-under 267. Luke Donald finished third, posting a 12-under 268. Other notable finishes were Matt Kuchar with a 9-way tie for fourth, Trevor Immelman in a tie for 13th, and David Duval with a tie for 17th. Adam Hadwin was the highest-finishing Canadian, tying for 37th place.
Next week’s tournament is the Greenbrier Classic, played at the Old White course in White Sulphur Springs in West Virginia. Players to note include Aaron Baddeley, Stuart Appleby, Kenny Perry, Ricky Barnes, Vijay Singh, John Daly, Jim Furyk, Rocco Mediate, Sergio Garcia, and Justin Leonard.
