Common Complaint: Deceleration Through Impact
A smooth continuous action is absolutely essential no matter what type of stroke or grip you are using. The pressure of trying to get your golf ball into that tiny hole that easily cause you to rush your shot by tensing up, which can cause deceleration through the impact of your shot.
The length behind your backswing is absolutely crucial when it comes to attempting to drive a good putt. The most destructive error that you can possibly make is simply to take your golf club too far back when swinging.
You then will tend to decelerate during the down swing, jabbing the ball with nearly no follow through at all. Unfortunately, when you start to do this you can forget about getting your ball anywhere near the hole at all, let along sinking a putt like you intended.
So what is the Cure?
Accelerate Smoothly Through the Ball
It does not matter how short the putt is or how fast the green, you must absolutely be able to accelerate the putter head into the ball's back if you want to stand any chance of getting the ball in the hole on a consistent basis. As a simple rule of thumb for you to follow, you should always make sure that your through swing is exactly the same length as the backswing that you take. Next, concentrate on smoothly accelerating your putter through the ball.
1 - Try this as a practice drill: Place two different tee pegs in the ground at the same distance apart from your ball on each side. The longer that the putt is, the longer the clearance will be needed between the tee pegs and the ball.
2 - Hit some puts, using the tee pegs so that you can regulate the length of the strokes that you make. Make sure that you are distancing the tees from the ball the right amount based on how far the putt is that you are trying to make. Experiment with different distances to learn where your strengths and your weaknesses are.
3 - Concentrate on accelerating smoothly with the putter head accelerating through the impact while taking care to make sure that the backswing and the follow through are both exactly the same length for the best possible results.
These are the fundamental keys to increasing your putting capabilities because they perfect your backswing and your through swing at the same time and make sure that you backswing and follow through properly for the straightest and best possible putt. While it will take some time to master this technique, it will surely have a profound impact on your ability to follow through with a putt.
