Putting 101

puttingPutting, to many people, is a lot like a religion. There are a multitude of different beliefs, but when it comes to putting there is really no general consensus regarding which belief system is the right one or the one worth following. Ben Crenshaw is a player that is perceived to be one of the greatest putting players of all time, and he proved this when he won the US Masters in 1984. Given the remarkable results that his strokes are capable of producing, breaching only the method that he follows for the purpose of putting would be like telling only part of a story rather than telling all of it.

The best thing that can be done regarding putting is to offer a wide variety of different methods that have proven themselves to be advantages, leaving you as the player to decide which type of putting style is going to land the ball in the hole the most often for you. You should be devoting a significant amount of time on the practice green to the concept of finding a putting technique that is going to be right for you. If you put a little bit of time and effort into this practice, you certainly will not forget it.

The Orthodox Putting Approach

Keep in mind that it is never a bad idea for you to be following the orthodox approach for any type of sport, and this same thing is true when it comes to the game of golf. While there is a lot of great personal interpretation that is allowed in the art of putting, it still definitely pays off when you adhere to the most basic fundamentals. If it is necessary, you can always create your own script to suit your own playing style, but make sure that you adapt it to these principles.

Benefits of the Orthodox Approach

1. The classic orthodox putting stroke is said to involve placing the hands in a neutral position with the palms facing one another in the reverse overlap grip. What this does is encourages your hands to operate as if they were one single cohesive unit rather than allowing them each to move independently of one another.

2. The posture for the classic orthodox method of putting involves a relaxed posture where you are comfortably bending from the waste with your hands and your arms hanging down in a natural way that is completely free of tension. You should be placing the ball forward inside your stance roughly opposite to the left heel's inside, and you stand be standing in such a way that your eyes are positioned over the ball, allowing you to swivel your head so that you can look along the entire line of the putt as you make it.
