The Langer Grip
Bernhard Langer is responsible for the Langer grip. He has made this method his very own, and it has come as a culmination of years worth of frustration when trying to overcome the so called "yips". Since this time, many other golfers, including amateur golfers and professionals alike, have followed the lead that Langer set. When considering this particular putting method, it is important for you to know that it is suited primarily toward short range putting and is not quite so effective when it comes to long range putting.
- You should be assuming a comfortable and confident stance, and you should be placing the head of the putter behind the ball while aiming the clubface with your right hand, and only your right hand.
- Now you should reach down using your left hand, and you should grip the club in a more orthodox manner, clasping your right hand fingers around the forearm of your left hand as if you were taking your own pulse. This is going to take the right hand effectively out of the stroke.
- Now, the ideal position of the ball is going to be the inside right of your left heel. You should be making sure that the pressure of your grip is going to be light. If you have any tension here, it is going to destroy all possibility of developing a stroke that is smooth and repeating.
- Now from here you should simply be concentrating on rocking your shoulders in a back and forth motion to provide all of the force required for the stroke that you are attempting to achieve.
- Now your hands should be remaining fairly passive, and there should not be any kind of wrist action whatsoever in order for you to achieve this stroke.
- Finally, the putter should be moving back and then through in a perfectly straight line, and it should remain square throughout the entire swing without any interference coming from your hands in the process. This is why you take your right hand out of the swing and rely on your left hand to complete the entire putt.
The Long Putter
The specially modified long putter has aroused a lot of attention and controversy ever since Sam Torrance first used it back in the 80s. Gradually, however, it has become more widely viewed as a viable method of putting, as has become evident by some of the greatest professionals in the world that have taken it up and used it to great effect in the process. It may look a little strange, but there are definitely benefits to this particular style which relies on the principle that you can create a perfect pendulum motion using the putter.
