Fred Couples may not have the star power of some of today’s younger players, but for many, his path to becoming one of the most well respected professionals is the game is inspirational. Couples is known for getting in there and doing his job, and this strategy has paid off for him time and time again. He’s certainly one of the winning-est golfers in the business right now and continues to improve his game each year.
He was born in Seattle, WA in 1959 and is best known for his incredibly long drives. In fact, his knick-name, Boom Boom stems from his ability to hit the ball far further than most of his opponents. His second most well known attribute is his friendly and easy nature, which earned him the secondary nickname of Mr. Cool. He’s not a hot head, but he knows this game and how to win.
Couples first got his start in the game of golf working as a caddie in his native Seattle. The course where he worked allowed him access to some of the most talented West Coast players and these formative years shaped the way he would play for the rest of his life. Although he went pro in 1980, it wasn’t until the 1990’s that he became a household name, at least in golfing circles. It took a lot of hard work, but Couples is certainly one of the most consistent players in the game and his ability to focus on the long haul has served him well.
What’s He Doing Now?
Couples is now living in the Seattle area and spends his time hosting benefits, designing new courses and working with the charitable foundation he set up in memory of his mother. Back problems have limited how much he plays, but his spirit will be meshed with golf for the rest of his days.

Interesting and Inspirational Quotes:
“[The successful, longtime partnerships almost always enjoy a true friendship, or at the very least an authentic regard for one another. In recent years, one thinks in particular of Love and Couples or Jos Maria Olazbal and Seve Ballesteros.] We can laugh at each other, ... In the World Cup I remember him whiffing a shot in a palmetto bush, and Joe [LaCava] and I were just laughing, and I would never do that to anyone else. I wasn't laughing because he whiffed it. It was just funny.”
“When you're prepared, you're more confident. When you have a strategy, you're more comfortable.”
“If Tiger Woods hits four really good drives, or Vijay (Singh) or Davis (Love III) or Ernie Els, I don't know a course they don't have an advantage on. So you have to keep it in play.”
