If you are adopting a square stance as for a regular full shot, then you are simply not going to have enough time to clear the left side, meaning you will get in the way of yourself.
You are actually going to need to align yourself just slightly to the left of your target line using an open stance. This is going to make it possible for you to clear your left side during the downswing, enabling you to deliver the club head directly square with the ball.
The Standard Pitch Shot
This is the shot that you are going to want to use when you are 70 yards to 100 yards away. Having established the proper position for addressing the ball, you are now going to be in great shape to make the perfect swing. If you can possibly imagine a three-quarter swing, back and then through, then this is definitely a good image that you are going to want to keep in your mind.
1 - First you are going to want to use your arms as well as your shoulders so that you can swing your club away from the ball along with the turning motion that your upper body is creating.
2 - Next, everything is going to want to move away together. This is all about staying connected in the backswing, and it is a far more consistent method than if your hands and your arms were to work independently in comparison to the rest of your body.
3 - Now your body rotation should be controlling the length of your backswing. It is going to be important for you to keep your arms working harmoniously in order to maintain this perfect relationship.
4 - Now in the downswing, you should be consciously making your arms and your body controls your swing simultaneously. Your hands need to stay in a passive manner.
5 - Now you should be accelerating the club head down and into the impact, putting emphasis on your body rather than on your hands.
6 - Finally, you should be practicing this technique with a wide variety of different club numbers including your 9 iron, your pitching wedge and your sand wedge for example. This is going to enable you to create the exact same swing without including any conscious manipulation, and it will make it possible for you to greatly vary the amount of distance that you can cross with the ball.
Once you master the techniques mentioned in our perfect pitching series, then you should have a much better grasp on what pitching is all about to the point where you can make the effort unconsciously with fairly consistent results.
