A collection of golfers created quite a bit of noise this past PGA tour, including Sergio Garcia, Anthony Kim and Camilo Villegas. Garcia began playing on the scene at the age of 19, where he almost bested Tiger woods in the 1999 PGA Championship, and was the youngest player to ever complete the Ryder cup. Garcia went on to win 19 events across the globe last year, becomes the number two player in the world after winning the HSBC Championship and the Players.
Two years ago, seven players in their twenties won tour events, while last year thirteen players took home 15 tours. The two who won twice: Anthony Kim (23) and Camilo Villagas (27).
At the PGA Tour's Mercedes Benz Championship at the Kapalua Resort in Maui, Kim and Villegas are pairing against powerhouse players such as Vijay Singh and Ernie Els. Tiger Woods, Garcia, Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington, the world's top four, will be starting their tour later on. In addition to Garcia, Adam Scott (28) has been a potential player to dethrone Woods, and after last year, Kim and Villegas have been added to that ever growing list.
Kim won his first tour by five points at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, and also won the AT&T National in Bethesda, MD. Both times, he faced a broad field of though competitors, but they didn't phase the player, who had a performance, hat was hard to miss in the Ryder Cup. Kim may be the one to take on Tiger Woods, if history has anything to say. Kim is 10 years below Woods, the same difference when Nickluas topped Palmer, and when Watson defeated Nicklaus.
Kim turned pro his junior year college at Oklahoma university, but he didn't drop out of college and the 2007 season was less of a priority for the player, who spent nights on the town. It was not until his girlfriend stepped on a glass mug which shattered into her foot causing massive bleeding. She narrowly miss it being a fatal wound, and that was what woke Kim up. Overnight, Kim started to practice early mornings, and having a new work ethic, he quickly started to rise in the PGA Tour.
At the BMW Championship, Villegas wrested the trophy from Kim. Nearly a month later, Villegas held off Kim and Garcia in the Tour Championship. In the classroom, weight room and golf course, Villegas worked to transform himself, going on to become the most ripped Player on the tour. It took a while for Garcia to make a name for himself, but he's a solid player who improved with every season. Both Villegas and Kim are poised to take on Tiger Woods, who is returning this season after his knee surgery. But do not expect his recent surgery to cut into his game, for Tiger has shown time and time before that little is able to stop Woods from achieving greatness. The question is, will Kim and Villegas provide Woods with a strong challenge?
