PGA Champions Tour Win Goes to Allen

After playing for two solid decades without winning a serious big tournament, Michael Allen decided to set his eyes on the prize for real upon debuting at the PGA Champions Tour. After taking the win with a 3 under 67 on Sunday, allowing him to take the Senior PGA Championship win by a solid two shots over the favorite, Larry Mize, Michael Allen chucked wholeheartedly about having finally achieved the exact scenario that he was looking for. He joked that he would be the first guy to ever take a senior tour win before he managed to win a regular PGA Tour event.

He is taking the competition win very well for obvious reasons, and he hammed it up in front of the cameras by smiling big, lifting his celebratory champagne flute and taking a long, deep seep. Michael Allen is fifty years old, and captured the first Champions Tour major win for the year, in his first debut on the tour for over 50's players. He ended his lengthy drought of victories by taking two late birdies and capturing the win. He almost did not accept the special exemption that was offered for him to come to Cleveland because he is still holding a regular tour card and is still eager to win a regular PGA tour event as well.

Michael Allen took earlier rounds of 74, followed by 66, then 67 and finally a finish at 6-below 274. Mize, who took second place, was surprised to hear that Michael Allen had not yet won a traditional PGA Tour event, but that this was actually his first win in a long time. Mize almost took first, despite starting the day two strokes behind. He had and maintained a two-stroke lead upon reaching the turn, but upon reaching the back nine he was a stroke over, and Allen slipped beneath him with a 2 under, taking the win.

This was the first win for Michael Allen since he played in 1998 at the Greater Austin Open as part of the Nationwide Tour. His win this weekend netted him $360,000. His only other win before the 1998 tournament was the 1989 Scottish Open which was held as part of the European Tour. Only three other players have won major championships in their Champions Tour debuts, including Roberto De Vincenzo at the United States Senior Open in 1980, Arnold Palmer during the Senior PGA Championships in 1980 and Jack Nicklaus who won the Tradition in 1990.

The player that took third during this competition was Bruce Fleisher, and he ended up with a 67. Tom Watson initially started off an entire seven strokes behind Allen, and he had the lower roundup at the day at a 66, taking fourth place. Allen originally began the day ahead of Jeff Sluman and Tom Kite by a shot, then went nine under before hitting the third bogey of his entire game and the only bogey during the final round.
