Geoff Ogilvy took the SBS Championship on Sunday in Kapalua, Hawaii with -22. It was a familiar feeling for Ogilvy, who won here last year by 6 shots and maintained a fairly easily lead. This year he was behind by 2 shots, but made it up for a 1-shot defeat of Rory Sabbatini.
This makes Ogilvy only the second person to ever win twice in a row at Kapalua. Fellow Aussie Stuart Appleby is the only other golfer to do so, setting a record with winning 3 straight years in a row. Only 5 other golfers have managed to win twice in a row, but those wins were before 1999 when the tournament was moved to Kapalua.
Ogilvy played a 6-under 67 after rallying during the final 10 holes for the win. Sabbatini got 5 birdies in a row, up to a 63, but Ogilvy pulled it out. This was his 8th round in a row in the 60s at Kapalua.
Ogilvy used new equipment this year, as V-shaped grooves were required in wedges to conform to the rules. He was pleased with the switch, saying it was easy to spin the ball on the 14th hole to get it back into the fairway. Sabbatini was 6 shots behind at the start of the final round, got his 5 birdies to get ahead. But on the 18th, in 2 shots he hadn't reached the green, then the 10-foot putt he missed shook his game. He knew he had to birdie on the last two holes to stay in the game, but he didn't manage it.
The win put Ogilvy back into the world's top 10, and gave him a 7th career PGA Tour win. He finished the tournament at 22-under 270. He hadn't won a tournament since February 2009 at the Match Play Championship. Next week, Ogilvy will take a week off before the tournament in Abu Dhabi. His third child is due next month, and he plans to be back home for that.
Third place went to Matt Kuchar with a 67, but could have been a threat if not for a poor showing on the back 9. Fourth place went to Sean O'Hair who did threaten at 20-under, and 2 shots away from the lead as he approached the 18th hole. He could have achieved par-5 if he'd managed the 18th in 2, but double-bogeyed and finished with a 68. Paul Casey placed in the top 10 for the first time since Colonial, which was a good comeback for him after a rib injury in July of last year.
Ogilvy being only the second to win 2 consecutive years since the tourney moved to Kapalua was just one two "two-fers." This year's tournament marked the second time par was broken by all the players in the winners-only field. Heath Slocum and Mark Wilson tied in last place at 2-under 290. The last time that happened was in 2003 when last place Rich Beem ended with 290.
