This week in golf featured the Memorial Tournament, presented by Morgan Stanley and hosted by Jack Nicklaus. The memorial tournament brings in plenty of big names as the golf world looks back at some of the greatest golfers and individuals who contributed to the growth of the game. Prior honorees include Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and Payne Stewart. The player recognized in 2010 is Severiano Ballesteros, a player with 5 professional majors.
Plenty of big name golfers participated in the Memorial Tournament, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory Sabbatini, Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler, Vijay Singh, Steve Stricker, Y.E. Yang, Geoff Ogilvy, Angel Cabrera, and Ernie Els.
The first two rounds saw plenty of ups and downs. David Duvall struggled with two 79’s, as did Mike Weir, shooting a 77 and 75. Other notable players who missed the cut included Boo Weekley, Angel Cabrera, Stuart Appleby, and Ernie Els.
Justin Rose and rookie Rickie Fowler saw success in the first round, with each shooting a 65. Rickie Fowler stole the lead with an impressive 66 on day two. Phil Mickelson stayed in the hunt with a first round 67, while Tiger Woods struggled with a first round 72.
Justin Rose managed to pull out a great win as he capped off his strong three rounds with a final-round 66. Rose’s 270 was 18 under, three shots above the second place finisher. This is Justin Rose’s first PGA tour win.
Rickie Fowler finished a close second with a 15-under 273. 21 year-old Fowler has finished runner up in three tournaments in his rookie year, showing signs of promise as he works his way through some of the season’s major tournaments.
Phil Mickelson finished with an 11-under 288, tying for fifth place with Ryan Moore and Tim Petrovic. Mickelson started off with a strong 67 and finished with a 69, but struggled on days two and three of the tournament.
Vijay Singh continued to work on his game and ranking, finishing with an 8-under 280. Singh dropped from the top 50 rankings, but has received an exemption for the U.S. Open. Singh will not have to work his way through qualifiers to make it into the field.
Defending Champion Tiger Woods worked on his comeback, placing 19th with a 6-under 282. Woods made his most recent comeback at the Memorial after taking three weeks off for a neck injury. Tiger continues to work through a rough season, only playing in four tournaments while battling injuries and the issues in his private life. In an interesting bit of new, Woods managed to hit 3 golfers during his final round.
With all these big names in the field, Justin Rose managed to shine. Currently ranked 33rd in the World Rankings, Rose came from behind to take the tournament. Rose’s 6-under 66 final round helped him to close the 4 shot gap standing between him and the win.
