Quail Hollow turned out to be a proving ground for a young golfer, and a stumbling block for the top one. Rory McIlroy has become the youngest winner on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods. And Tiger, in his second tournament since his comeback at the Masters 3 weeks ago, managed the worst score he’s had in his entire career on an American golf course.
McIlroy will be 21 on Tuesday, putting his first PGA victory at 20 years, 11 months and about 29 days. Woods won his first PGA victory when he was 20 years and 10 months. McIlroy is obviously a young golfer who bears close watching.
The shot that gave McIlroy his victory, the one that he says made the difference in this tournament, was on Friday when he was 2 shots too high to make the PGA cut this year. He’s missed the cut the last 2 years, and was struggling to make it this time. The shot that’s being touted as the one that made him at Quail Hollow was just one of many impressive shots he managed, but this one was something many much more accomplished golfers couldn’t have managed—a 206-yard shot in breezy conditions that went over the water and landed 6 feet from the pin, giving him an eagle.
Other impressive shots during this tournament included a shot from the bunker on hole 16 that landed just 5 feet away, and a shot up a hill on the hole before, that landed 3 feet from the cup and gave him another eagle. He was simply on fire at Quail Hollow, proving that his quick rise to the top was no fluke. He had the lowest score during the last 2 days of the tournament; he ended with 10-under 62, a full 4 shots less than recent Masters winner Phil Mickelson. He even managed to end the tournament in dramatic fashion, with a 40-foot putt for a birdie on hole 18.
And as amazing as McIlroy’s victory was, Tiger Woods’ loss on the course was just as dramatic.
Woods managed to tie for 4th place a few weeks ago at the Masters, which was his first golf tournament in over 5 months. He hadn’t played since a holiday crash outside his home that sparked a firestorm of accusations and personal scandal. Tying for 4th wasn’t Woods’ style, but it was considered a good sign that he’d soon be back on his game, given his time off the course. But now that he’s missed the cut for the PGA tour, some experts are worried that Woods has completely lost his game, at least for now.
It marks only the 6th time he’s missed the cut in his entire career. And not only was his score of 79 the worst he’s ever made in the US, it’s also his second highest score of all time. If you look just at the back 9, he matched the worst score he’s ever had. His 36-hole total of 153 was the highest he ever managed on the PGA tour.
