LPGA Tour Championship: Lorena Ochoa, Anna Nordqvist, and Jiyai Shin

Anna NordqvistIn the LPGA Tour Championship, a heated battle between Lorena Ochoa and Jiyai Shin for the LPGA player of the year had kept both women on their toes throughout the tourney, but it was the last hole that decided who got the title.

Lorena Ochoa won the title for the 4th consecutive year. She was also awarded the Vare Trophy because she has the lowest scoring average. Ochoa didn't win the LPGA, however. Anna Nordqvist won the Tour Championship on Monday, with Ochoa finishing 2nd.

Nordqvist finished 13 under par after a final round of 65. Lorena Ochoa was two strokes behind, cinching top player after Shin couldn't get a birdie at the 18th hole. Shin was leading 156-148 when they started the tournament. After Ochoa advanced to second place, had Shin placed 7th or above, she could have won the award.

The 17th hole decided the tournament for Ochoa with a bogey putt. But then Shin's ball went into the bunker on that hole, and when she kicked it out it didn't make the green, so she bogeyed as well. The 18th hole saw Ochao get the ball about 15 or 16 feet away from the hole, then she managed to sink the putt. Shin's 18th hole came shy of the green, with a chip shot that missed by a few inches, and Ochoa knew she'd clinched the title, if not the tournament. Shin and Ochoa were also in a close race for the Vare Trophy, with only decimal points separating their scores.

This was Nordqvist's second LPGA victory, a companion win alongside her LPGA Championship. She had 12 under the 5 consecutive birdies between holes 8 and 12. Thirteen was bogeyed but she picked up birdies on 14 and 15, clinching her win. Na Yeon Choi and Kristy McPherson tied for 3rd place at under 10. Three players ended the tourney at 7 under, and 4 players tied for 8th place, including Shin.

The LPGA had been plagued by delays, first by heavy rains that soaked the course and made play impossible at first. Once the play started again, the play was called once because of impending darkness. The course was still wet during the last day of LPGA play, and like during the previous days, players could lift, clean and place their balls.

Na Yeon Choi ended up in 3rd place, but she made a dramatic shot when she holed a 175-yard shot on the last day from the 9th fairway. Then she birdied at hole 10 to end up with a -10.

Shin only needed to be in the top 7, but she couldn't maintain the standing, with trouble already plaguing her during the front 9. She didn’t birdie until hole #11, and at that point Ochoa had only one shot left that she needed to pull ahead and take the lead. Holes 8 and 9 proved problematic, however, and Nordqvist took the lead.

Ochoa's 8-ft birdie on hole 15 added drama to the competition once again, and helped her finish 2nd at 11 under.
