Kim Wins Houston Open

Anthony Kim won the Houston Open on Sunday, marking his third PGA win. The tournament went into a playoff, matching Kim against Vaughn Taylor who, thanks to this loss, will miss out on the Masters this year.

The regular tournament play ended with both men at 12-under 276. Kim would have won had he not missed a short, 6-foot putt on the 18th hole of the day's play. Despite missing that par putt, he came back and got par on the 1st hole of the playoff, leading him to a victory.

Kim said that if this had happened a couple of years ago, missing that last putt on the 18th hole which was surrounded by water, the tournament probably would have ended with his bag of clubs being thrown into the water. But Sunday he felt comfortable and stayed calm, despite the setback.

This is Kim's first win since the AT&T National in 2008. He'd ranked as high as #6 in 2008 but was plagued by injuries and problems through most of 2009. He worked mentally and physically to get back into top shape, and has managed to finish in the top 25 during his last 4 tournaments, and will be playing in the Masters this week.

The 18th hole that was repeated during the playoff went poorly for Taylor, whose drive sent the ball into a bunker. Then the ball didn't make it all the way to the hole on his 18-foot putt. Kim made the par putt and took the top spot.

Graham Delaet and Charl Schwartzel tied for third place with 11-under just one stroke behind the leaders. Shaun Micheel finished two strokes short, while Jeff Maggert and Kevin Stadler were 4 strokes behind.

This is the second year a playoff was needed to decide the winner of the Houston Open, with J.B. Holmes losing to Paul Casey last year after Holmes bogeyed the playoff hole.  This is the first year, however, since 2005 that this tournament didn't suffer from a rain delay. It did rain during the tournament, but never enough to cause problems with play.

Kim came into play on Sunday tied in the lead with Bryce Molder, but got a birdie on the first hole of the day and stayed in the lead until his mistake on the 18th hole that caused the need for a playoff.  Phil Mickelson finished the tournament after a very mixed day at 2-under with 71. Three double-bogeys within the first 10 holes set him too far behind to catch up. But even after that, he managed to get 6 birdies in a row to match Matt Every's streak of six in a row in Phoenix, and he did it while using his wife's oncologist as his caddy.  It wasn't enough to pull him to the top of the leaderboard.

Taylor needed to win in Houston to make it to the Masters next week, and said he was hugely disappointed by his loss which will keep him out of play. The Masters also marks the highly anticipated comeback of Tiger Woods after several months off the tour for personal reasons.
