This week in golf was relatively slow, with players traveling and preparing for next week’s British Open. Plenty of players were a part of a Celebrity Pro-Am in the area, and began to get in practice Rounds at St. Andrews. The week did feature a tournament, however, with the John Deere Classic playing out in Silvis, Illinois. The tournament was played at TPC Deere Run, with a $4.4 million purse. The defending champion was Steve Stricker, who shot a 20-under 264.
The tournament featured a few big and recognized names as players looked to capitalize on the absence of players like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Recognizable names included Steve Stricker, Rocco Mediate, Kenny Perry, Boo Weekley, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, and Stuart Appleby.
The first round saw some impressive rounds of golf from players like Steve Stricker and Paul Goydos. Steve Stricker fired and incredible first round of 60, while Goydos became one of the few players to break 60 with a first-round 59. Matt Jones and James Nitties came close with a 64, as did Aaron Baddeley and Michael Letzig.
The second round helped to bring out some definition in the leaderboard, with players scoring slightly higher than the first round. Steve Stricker stayed in the lead, thanks to his second round 66. Goydos stayed close, firing a 68 in the second round. Boo Weekly fired an impressive 63 to make up for his first-round 70.
There were some players who struggled, with a few players missing the cut. Bubba Watson struggled with a first round 67 and a second round 72 to miss the cut by one stroke. Stuart Appleby suffered the same fate with a similar score of 139. David Duval and Rickie Fowler also failed to make the cut.
Those at the top of the leader board continued to stay in place, with Steve Stricker hanging onto the lead with a third-round 62. Paul Goydos dropped back with a 67, but managed to stay in second place with Jeff Maggert, who fired a third-round 63.
The end of the tournament was a little difficult for players to handle, with Steve Stricker and Jeff Maggert firing a final-round 70. Steve Stricker managed to hang on, holding out for a 258, 26-under win. Goydos was in second with a 24-under, and Maggert came in third with a 20-under performance.
In other news this week, Tiger Woods was inactive, while Mickelson played in the European Tour’s Barclays Scottish Open. Mickelson was joined by Edoardo Molinari, Rory Sabbatini, Graeme McDowell, and John Daly. Mickelson struggled, missing the cut after shooting a +3 over two days. Vijay Singh matched Mickelson’s score, missing the cut as well.
Next week will feature plenty of great golf and incredible storylines, thanks to the coming British Open at St. Andrews. Tiger Woods will tee off with Justin Rose and Camilo Villegas during the first two rounds, looking to pick up his game and win his first Major of the year.
