After a low-speed car accident that's prompted tabloid-esque speculation about Tiger Woods' private life, he cancelled his participation in the Chevron World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, California, the golf tournament that he sponsors and usually wins. His departure from the tournament led to a lucky invitation to Graeme McDowell, who ranked 55th in the world, and who was sharing the lead with Y.E. Yang as the tournament headed into its final round.
McDowell didn't win the tournament, but he came in 2nd. Since the Chevron World Challenge offers world ranking points for the first time this year, his good ranking makes it almost certain that he'll be eligible for the Masters, and it upped his world ranking from 55 to 38.
Yang dropped down to finish in 9th place, and the early pace-setters Ian Poulter and Zach Johnson, who were tied for the lead after Thursday's play, were part of a 4-way tie for 5th, since 3rd place ended up a 2-way tie between Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington.
The winner of the World Challenge was Jim Furyk, who hasn't won since the 2007 Canadian Open. This win after 2 years of losses garners him $1.35 million dollars and ups his ranking to 6th in the world. His victory over McDowell came down to one-shot, as he ended a 13-under 275. McDowell birdied on the last hole when a hole from the fairway would have forced a playoff, to bring him in at second.
Lee Westwood missed a par putt to end up with 70 and a 2-way tie for 3rd place with Padraig Harrington, also at 70, but with 2 eagles in the round.
Furyk lead from the 10th hole, where took a birdie, and stayed in the lead. He even bunkered a ball on the par-317th and had to knock it out, sending it 35 feet to the other side of the hole, but he managed to sink the par putt to stay on top. On the 18th hole, he knocked the ball within 5 feet. Westwood tied him with a birdie on the 17th. But Furyk holed it and stayed ahead.
Six different players had the lead or a share of it on Sunday, with eight different players doing that on Saturday. McDowell's Saturday play involved 3 consecutive birdies on the back 9, an eagle on the par-5 13th and a long birdie on the 5th. The low point of that day for McDowell was a double bogey on the par-5 16th when he shot into the hazard.
Yang, who was sharing the lead with McDowell on Saturday but finished 9th, started with a birdie, languished, then managed to get 2 birdies on the back 9. Fever and illness plagued Yang through the tournament.
And Harrington, who tied for 3rd, was pleased with his play over the first 2 days but not the 3rd. Kenny Perry and Sean O'Hair offered a challenge for the top spots as they finished Saturday at 7-under 209. O'Hair finished Sunday in the tie for 5th with Poulter, Johnson and Stewart Cink. Perry finished Sunday in a 2-way tie for 11th place.
