The end of the Travelers Championship might have seemed like a great present for Frederick Jacobson, but it seems that the real winner was his daughter. The one shot victory was promised to his 5 year-old daughter before he started out. He told her that he would be holding up the trophy just like she had witnessed other golfers doing like on television.
The victory was not an easy win for this first time title winner. In fact, in the opinion of many, it was not for the missed 4-foot par putt on the 18th green by Ryan Moore that he would not have been able to keep his promise. In fact, both John Rollins and Moore threatened to take away his victory at many different times. In the end, Jacobson was able to best the competition and keep the promise that he had made to his little girl.
The 36 year old Swedish native has been on the tour for some time. He has three European Tour victories, but this is his first time earning one on the PGA Tour. He was able to win the day with a 4 under 66 for the day to beat out Rollins and Moore. His win was what you would expect to see out of someone who has been playing on the tour for eight years and has a lot of talent. In fact, he was able to able to finish the weekend being just two shots off of the record for lowest score having achieved a 20 under score for the weekend.
Jacobson’s march towards his victory was paved by the fact that he landed all of his tee shots on the 28 fairways for the weekend. He even almost was able to achieve the feat only achieved last by Lee Trevino, which is to get a completely bogey free score card for 72 holes. He was 63 in before he had any problems getting the recognition that he wanted to earn.
Other notables at the Travelers Championship include the UCLA rising star, 19 year old Patrick Cantlay. The amateur was able to achieve the tour record for an amateur. This is due to the 60 that he scored on Friday and had a 72 and 70 for the weekend which allowed him to earn an 11 under for the weekend. It is an impressive score for a young talent and marks the individual who will be someone to watch in the near future should he ascend to join the PGA Tour.
Michael Thompson also made a name for himself by being able to shoot a 62 on the final day. He finished the weekend with a score of 18 under to be in fourth place. This is a great feat for someone just out of qualifying school. He is excited about just being on the tour and the company that he gets to play in. The spot that he achieved through the weekend is just icing on the cake.
