Smallest unit out there -- works great !
|

| Reviewer: J. Todd, Highlands Ranch, CO USA |
I've had my Guru for about a month. I compared it to all of the Sky Caddie models as well as some of the other smaller vendors before purchasing.
First off, it works great. Follow the Quick Start directions and you'll be off and running in no time. I like that it automatically checks for the latest firmware release and downloads that to your Guru (if needed) everytime you hook it up to download new courses.
It is the smallest unit out there -- a little bigger than my Palm Centro but nice and thin/lite. I carry it in my back pocket and pull it out like a yardage book before every shot. It doesn't get smashed if I sit in the cart either :-)
I didn't buy the Sky Caddie for the following reasons:
1. Size -- it's a little bigger/fatter than the Guru
2. Annual Fees -- who wants to pay $50/year ??
3. Satellite Acquisition -- these things only work well if they're able to sync to enough Satellites to be accurate. I'd heard from a few friends that they no longer use their Sky Caddies because they would lose "sync" too many times to be useful/trusted. Guru syncs fast and connects to more Satellites.
The Guru has far fewer courses than the Sky Caddie but they've been able to map all of the courses I've requested (at least 5) in less than 7 days -- certainly acceptable to me.
One other suggestion if you have a Guru and a Garmin Nuvi (360 is what I have)-- the A/C charger works for both (if you're like me, it's hard to keep all of my cords/chargers tagged, etc). Save the $20 from Golf Guru and use your Garmin charger.
In a nutshell, if you want a fairly simple device that works great and fits in your pocket, The Guru is the one for you. When you're on the course, fancy color graphics aren't going to lower your score -- quick, accurate info at your fingertips will ...

I love this thing...

This GPS has a lot of features for the price. Accuracy is excellent - it uses 16 channels compared to most others using 12, holds 20 courses as compared to most others holding 10. Customer service is top notch. Number of available courses is growing quickly. If your course isn't available, you have can request that it be added with an estimated turn around of 7 days.
I too am waiting for a carrying case or cart/belt clip to be available. In the meantime, it fits nicely into my Bagboy Express 180 push carts accessory compartment.
I'm very satisfied with this GPS. Best bang for the buck in my opinion. |
Awesome unit

First, I have to say that the customer service for this company is amazing. I ordered the golf guru through amazon.com because I had a gift card. I wanted the carrying case but it wasn't offered on the amazon.com website. So I purchased the carrying case through their own website on the same day. Unfortunatly, I was going to have to pay shipping on both products since they were not purchased together. I received an email the next day telling me that they noticed I made 2 seperate purchases and they would ship them together and only charge me for shipping on the golf guru unit and not the carrying case. I knew right away this was going to be a great company to deal with.
Second, I loved the golf guru as soon as I got it. It is so easy to use and download the courses I wanted. The screen functions are easy to see and use. I love that you can map a course out if you want to. My friend has the Sky caddie and he gets no reception at several courses we play in Long Island...I am able to get reception on every couse every time.
Third, the statistics portion is awesome. As you play your round it will ask you at the end of each hole for your score, if you made GIR, FIR, and how many putts. At the end of the round you will get all your stats for the round, % of GIR, % of FIR, and avg. putts per hole. This is very handy if your into keeping stats.
Lastly, I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to know "how far away am I" which is just about everyone.
GREAT PRODUCT, VERY VERY HAPPY. |

I bought the gps golf guru about a month ago. At first I was disappointed as only one course out of the six that I regularly play was mapped. I sent in a request for them to map the other courses and within two weeks all of them were available. One of them had the front and back nines reversed, but that was due to the course having been renumbered some time ago. Again, within a week of my notifying them the correction was made. I THINK THAT IS GREAT SERVICE, and would recommend this item to everyone.

| I have been using my Guru for a while. Every aspect of the device is great. Never a glitch. The best part is their customer service. They answer the phone and resolve any problem with lightning speed. The software is continually upgraded and new features added without having to buy a new unit. And they are in Austin, Tx. not New Delhi. All downloads are free til the end of 2011. When I needed a course mapped, it took 3 days. This is the most for your money in the field. |
MORE THAN JUST A GOLF GPS

| I owned an iGolf GPS Caddie. It's a good basic unit that provides front, center and back distances to the green. After a year, the internal memory would not retain the stored courses. iGolf technical support stated that my only option was to buy another unit or download the courses everytime I play. That was unacceptable, so I bought a GPS Golf Guru. For the same price, this is a much better product. Not only does it give distances to the green, but it keeps your scores and statistics that can be uploaded for your USGA handicap. This unit was obviously designed by golfers for golfers. It works naturally as you play your round. From the tee, I like the initial view, it displays the distance to the pin, and distances to all the obstacles that are marked. When I'm ready for my approach shot, I switch to the secondary view, which gives the distances to the front, back and pin, as well as an outline of the green where you can determine the actual distance to the pin by moving the icon to the flag position. As you come off the green, it automatically goes to scoring for that hole and you put in your score, number of putts, green in regulation (GIR) and fairway in regulation (FIR). You do that for every hole and it only takes seconds. At anytime you can look at the scorecard or the stats for the round. This is more than a GPS unit. It displays the battery level, signal strength and time. It's a built in rechargeable battery, so you do not have to purchase batteries separately. The initial screen has the owner's name and telephone number, so if lost, the owner can be contacted. The best feature is the free unlimited course downloads and if your course isn't available they will add it within a week. Sweet! |

The Golf Guru is by far the best golf GPS unit on the market today. The Guru not only gives distances to the green but most major obstacles such as bunkers, water hazards and fairway ends on doglegs. On top of this, the Guru allows you to add distances that are important on your course and/or allows you make your own maps if you desire. GolfLogix only allows you to use their predrawn maps often which are lacking real important distances such as how far is it to a water hazard and they charge for more then one downloaded map. SkyCaddie has an expensive yearly membership fee and some folks questions the accuracy of their unit. GolfBuddy has a good selection of courses but not the ones I play. From my observation new courses are not added quickly and you can not map your own course. SureshotGPS allows the golfer to map their own course and has limited premapped courses to select from.
The best thing about the Golf Guru is the customer service!!! If a course map is not available just enter a request and within a short time it becomes available. If you have a question email them and they respond very quickly sometimes within minutes. You can also phone them. The software is updated on a regular basis and all this for no extra yearly fee.
The Golf Guru has so many features that the unit needs several button to use them all. Some people may find this more then they want to deal with. I find that once set, the unit needs little attention unless you want extra information or you want to use the scoring feature. If you have the skills to operate a computer and can read this note, you have plenty of knowledge to use the Golf Guru. Downloading course information is a simple process and with the ability to hold 20 course maps I cover most of the courses I play. If I need more I just delete a course and add a new one, you can always added it back later.
I would buy the Golf Guru again in a heart beat. |

I got the Golf Guru last week, one week after ordering direct from Golf Guru( their shipping price was $3.00 less than Amazon and they give an option of AC or in car charger).
My favorite course wasn't on their list so I requested that it be added. It took 6 days to create it.
Played first round yesterday. Unit powered up immediately (note the first time it will take a while since it isn't anywhere near where it was the last time it was turned on). Unit worked great. I finally know how long my drives are and the distances to the green. I can even move the flag on the green to adjust for this round's location. Unit fit in my pocket with no problems and it really light.
I can also add or change items on the course, if necessary. They provide an excellent 77 page manual along with a quick reference guide, but the controls are very easy to understand and use.
Bottom line: I'm very happy with the unit.

I purchased the Golf Guru after having had needed too many repairs on several Bushnell golf binoculars. Bushnell refused to solder a broken part of the battery compartment and wanted me to purchase a third pair of golf binocs for $350. So instead, I decided to go with a GPS device and Golf Guru had very positive reviews.
I am very happy that I did as I am quite pleased with the Golf Guru. The courses are added on through an internet site for free. Should a course not be present, the Golf Guru Gods will add it for you in several days. They are responsive to e-mail requests and outside of a couple of minor glitches on a hole or two, the Golf Guru is accurate to the yard.
An amazing feature is the ability to move the flag by moving it on your screen so you adjust to front, side, middle and rear green placements. This assists considerably on approach shots. I would highly recommend this golf GPS model. FIVE STARS without hesitation........ |

| This is the best best gps ever. I own a sg2 and bought a golf buddy. The sg2 was a good item but was a little short on features. The golf buddy was suppose to be the gps that would change it all. Well it wasn`t, the first time I used it at the course on a par 5. The hole I was playing had a tree in the fairway ,no distance to the tree . Plus I was standing on the 150 marker and it was tell me 100 yards ,well no thanks . It had many issues like that. So I took it back. I did alot of research before I bought the golf guru. Well let me say it rocks! The distance is right on with other gps and the markers it has all the ojects plus it has a feature to customize and add more objects on the screen. Now here is the kicker it can mark a distance with 1 club then you mark again a distance from that mark to the next shot nice... It will keep track of putts per round and averge putts greens in reg o yeah fairway in reg to. What more can I say this unit has it all check it out if nothing else .. |

| i have used the device twice now. its awesome......it was extremely accurate. the website was easy to use. customer support has been extremely responsive. i have requested 2 courses to be added to website and was done w/in 2 days. the software just got upgraded and i was emailed to uninstall and reinstall and used it yesterday......worked great. i love the scoring and statistics feature to keep track of greens in regulation and fairways and putts per hole %. i would never play golf w/o it again. i haven't used other gps devices but a friend has a laser finder....but you have to be able to see the target especially the pin. yesterday i had a blind shot from 130 yards away and put it w/in 8 feet w/o seeing the pin....just knowing the pin position and adjusting the pin placement on the guru. people i played with...my wife and a friend continued to ask me how far to the water..how far to the first trap...how far to the pin and back of green........unbelievable. i am going to go map my driving range for practice and accuracy today.Gps Golf Guru |

I watched an infomercial on the golf channel for Sky Caddy which peaked my interest enough to decide to purchase a hand held GPS Unit. After watching the infomercial, I decided to do some research on line for hand held GPS devices. What seemed to be a reoccurring theme was that customer service after the purchase was crucial. From all the reviews I read, the Golf Guru GPS unit had the best service after purchase. The unit was also small making it easier to handle and carry on the course.
I purchased the unit and had to call the customer service desk after I received the unit. I probably didn't have to but felt better knowing that someone would be holding my hand while setting up the unit. The customer service rep answered the phone on the 3rd ring and walked me through the entire set up process.
Using the unit is easy and it is accurate. I was able to check yardages with the gps unit on the golf cart at a few courses I played and also with the course yardage markers and found the Golf Guru to be on the mark everytime. The screen was also easy to read in the sunlight.
A bonus you get with this unit is that you do not have to pay an annual membership fee to download courses.
I highly recommend this unit. |

Santa brought me the Golf Guru GPS System and I used it on Christmas Day.
Yes, my wife gave me permission. I have good news and bad news.
The good news? - The product worked marvelously. It was easy to download my course. The distances were extremely accurate. It works as advertised. It collects statistics that makes an analytical wacko like myself very happy.
The bad news? - I don't hit the ball as far as I thought. Very depressing. Nothing like another illusion shattered. Isn't that what growing up is all about. Maybe at 63, I should move to the white tees and start acting my age. |
Absolutely Incredible !! This product and service is tops !!

| I did lots of research and review reading before I settled on this GPS and I'll tell you folks, I couldn't be happier. I just got a chance to use it this past weekend at my favorite local course, (which was already available for download), I was amazed at the accuracy of the map. I could count down as I walked towards the green, as my foot touched the fringe the Guru said 0 yards to the front of the green. Every time my ball landed near one of the course yardage markers I checked to see if the Guru agreed and it was always "spot on the money". About the product support. There is another local Golf course that I play several times a season that I wanted to have a map for. I put in a request on Friday evening. The following Monday I got an email stating that my new map was available for download(synching) to my Guru. What more can be said. Your search is over folks ... buy this GPS and enjoy !! |

I have the Grayscale GPS Unit.
Simply put, The Golf Guru is everything it advertises and more.
The "more" comes because of the terrific customer service. After I bought it, I downloaded the software and (potentially) made a mistake. When I went to the the course, it appeared as though I had none available, which was the case. While I was there, I called the customer service and spoke to a REAL LIVE PERSON! He was extremely helpful, but I had to go back and run it one more time. The cool thing was that he could see that I had downloaded the software and the courses and talked me through a few troubleshooting steps, but they weren't going to be there no matter what (at least not that day). He told me that he was sad for me that it didn't work, but as soon as I get home turn it on again and call him. No need, after I got back home, I went through the steps for downloading patiently (this time). No need for calling back because everything appeared.
I have used it 3 times now and double check with various distance markers whenever I am near them. Surprise... it is right on the money!
I am very pleased with my purchase. I give the Golf Guru an emphatic "thumbs up" and highly recommend it! When you look across the competitive horizon... when all things are equal, I don't want to be left on an island when I need help. These guys are serious about providing support to the people who matter the most - their customers! Before you purchase a GPS, be sure to review what people are saying about customer service and support. You'll find that support for their competitive products comes with the cost of pain... usually in the form of YOUR precious time!!
I am disappointed in one thing though - my ego gets a beating whenever I "mark" my spot to check the distances I hit my clubs!!! If they'd just fix that, I'd give 'em a 6 out of 5! |

I've had my golf guru for about a month now and have played 4 rounds of golf with it. The yardages it gives are spot on and it's very easy to use. It locks on to satellites very quickly and the stats it lets you track are very handy.
The customer service is also very good. I requested 2 additional courses to be mapped and received confirmation that they were available for downloading within 4 days.
The only 2 things I would improve are: ability to hold more courses (the colour version can hold 200, this one only holds 20), and the fact that knowing the yardage to the flag and hitting it that yardage are 2 very different things. I guess no gps can help with that. |

After researching these devices I chose the Golf Guru after reading several comments about the great customer service. This seemed to be lacking with some of the more "well advertised" systems. This unit works great, has all the features that you could ask for. It has a very good price point, no annual fee and will hold up to 20 courses. It's not fancy and it's not yet a household name but the device works great. I had some questions early on about courses and the response was immediate and friendly. I've used it side by side with a friends Sky Caddie (almost twice as much money and a yearly fee to load courses) and the Guru is less pretty, but it's also smaller and easier to use. My ability to "move the pin locations" gave me a much better info regarding near, pin and far distances then the sky caddy did.
You can't go wrong with this unit for the money. |

| I've had my Guru for almost 2 months now and it's completely met my needs. This is the B&W (non-color) version, but it's worth the cost savings and views clearly in all but very dim lighting. The yardage readings are very accurate and quick to update. Although it only allows 20 downloaded courses and 20 manually mapped courses, you can save downloaded courses as mapped courses, essentially enabling 40 downloaded courses. This GPS is a great value with no subcription costs either!. It even has responsive customer support which corrected a downloaded course's 'par value' on a particular hole within a few days. |
Best Golf GPS with No Annual Fee!

| Review Date: May 20, 2009 |
| Reviewer: prospetiva, Los Angeles, CA |
I had been in the look out for a good, simple black and white GPS for quite some time and has flirted buying one of these golf gurus several times. Most of my friends had the Golf Logix and since it was the only one I've seen in action, I almost ended up getting one. What stopped me from getting other brands was the Annual fee you have to shell out to retain service, while others make you pay for course downloads. The only other golf gps I know that did not make you pay was the golf buddy pro which had the courses pre-loaded but bad reviews and sattelite connection feedbacks was the dealbreaker for me there. I finally got the guru and here's what I have to say:
QUALITY: The black plastic shell is well made and durable and buttons are very responsive and easy to reach. The screen is easy to read especially under direct sunlight but hard to read in dim lit rooms. I installed a protective LCD cover to preserve the screen but it seems durable enough even without it.
EASE OF USE: The website www.gpsgolfguru.com offers tons of tutorials and information to guide even the most tech challenged individuals. If you do not understand the owner's manual, just watch the videos under "getting started" and follow it step by step. Downloading courses was a snap. I also moved the courses I played the most to "my mapped courses" to save space on the "community mapped" to make sure I make full use of the 40course capacity of the unit. How do you do this? simple, download the course you want, and once loaded on the guru, go to "map course" and select 'load course'. choose the course you want to move on "my mapped" and once loaded select save. you will then get a duplicate copy of the course called "my whatever course". When you log back in to golf guru, uncheck the original whatever course and this will remove it from your guru when you 'sync'. Use on the course was very easy and it reminds you to enter your score after evey hole before moving on to the next one. It also shows you your score card after the game and when you go online with it the next time, it 'syncs' your score to the guru server and keeps it there for your record.
SATTELITE CONNECTION: It takes roughly 3-5 minutes to get a signal and once connected, it doesn't go offline. It tells me how many sattelites it's using and has atleast 6 sattelites locked on everytime. Signal bar doesn't go below 3 bars and it works even inside the house with 2 bars. I tested the gps status while driving around in my car and the speed was right on with my speedometer (a little experiment) so I know that the gps on this baby was accurate! Even shows you your altitude how cool is that!
BATTERY: Even after a round of golf (4-4.5 hours) the battery was at full charge. I didn't bother recharging it, just turned it off and put it in my table drawer. I'm going to try to see how many games it can last without charging...
All in all I am extremely satisfied with the purchase and I will have to admit that it gave me the confidence to hit the ball without thinking of anything else and just trusting my swing. I did not have to second guess my club selection and will probably help me guage distances by eye the longer I use it. So if you were like me, an undecided in the golf gps caucus, I strongly urge you to get out and vote and reward yourself with the GOLF GURU!
