Ricardo Gonzalez managed to win the SAS Masters this last Sunday by a total of two strikes after taking birdies on five of the remaining six holes of the course, walking away with a four under sixty-nine. This thirty-nine year old Argentine player managed to finish at ten below 282 on the Barseback Golf Club course, the 7,665 yard course is the longest in the history of the European Tour.
Tying for second was Jamie Donaldson from Wales, who closed with his course record of sixty-eight. In third place was Jeppe Huldahl from Denmark with a seventy-four, another two shots behind Jamie Donaldson.
Gonzalez managed to pitch to two feet from the sixteenth hole tee, then he holed a bunker shot on the following hole, allowing him to take the lead. On the final hole he managed to hit the ball over trees, landing within a mere five feet of the flag. Gonzalez made it obvious after the match that he felt very confident.
The overnight leader, Marcus Fraser from Australia slipped into a seventy-seven, sharing fourth place at 288 with six additional players.
This was the fourth European Tour win for Ricardo Gonzalez, who played on the Challenge Tour as well as smaller events throughout Sweden earlier during his career. He claimed to be quite happy after the tournament, claiming that this was a very important win for him since he has not been playing so well in 2009. He did not manage to make it into the top ten in thirteen of his previous tournaments this year. He also missed six different cuts.
A Barseback member, Henrik Stenson, who is moving to fifth place when the world rankings are finally updated on Monday, closed tied for 73rd among seventy-eight total finishers with a disappointing seventy-six.
Of the five birdies that Ricardo Gonzalez landed in his final six holes, the last two of them are going to live long in his memories.
First, he holed a very difficult bunker shot at the 17th hole, a 459 yard shot. After hooking into trees down along the 437 yard last, he managed to thread his 9e-iron approach, reaching through a nine feet gap to hit the ball within five feet of the hole. It has been a hard year for him, but his playing in this tournament has been incredible and he finally seems to be rising in the ranks again. He still isn't sure if his final shot was luck or just an act of brilliance.
His last circuit victory was actually five years ago. Because of mixing out on the British Open, Ricardo Gonzalez is finally proud to say he has earned a tour nickname, which is "El Hombre del Hacha", or "The Axeman".
