Geoff Ogilvy was born on June 11, 1977 and is an Australian professional golfer that now resides in Scottsdale in Arizona. Ogilvy turned professional in May of 1998 and won a European Tour card during the qualifying school of that year. He played on to the European tour in 1999 and then again in 2000, taking 65th place in his first season, then improving by taking 48th place during his second attempt. In 2001 he joined the PGA Tour in the United States, finishing in the top 100 in each one of the five seasons he played. He took his first tournament win in 2005 at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson in the PGA tour. He went on to beat Davis Love III in February of 2006 in the 2006 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship finals. He won his first championship in the 2006 United States open, overcoming Phil Mickelson.
Where He Is Now -
Ogilvy has recently spent more than 50 weeks in the top ten golf rankings. He won his second World Golf Championship title this year, the 2008 WGC-CA Championship. He shot 17 under par and won by a single shot. This was his first PGA Tour win since he played in the 2006 U.S. Open. He finished tied for second in the 2008 Shell Houston Open, which moved him up to number 5 in the Official World Golf Rankings. He rose again, placing third in late June of 2008. Ogilvy is the founding owner of MOJO Pies, the Original Australian Pie, which is located in Scottsdale in Arizona. He is also a proud supporter of the st. Kilda Football Club. Ogilvy is still golfing, though he does not seem to be playing as often as he once did, perhaps because of his relocation to Arizona from Australia.
Career Highlights -
Ogilvy has two amateur wins, including the German Amateur Open Championship in 1996 and the Lake Macquarie Amateur in 1997. He also has 4 professional wins, which are PGA tour wins. In 2005 he won the Chrysler Classic of Tucson, and in 2006 he won the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. In 2006 he also won the U.S. Open, and then in March 2008 he won the WGC-CA Championship. He has one major championship win under his belt, the U.S. Open in 2006.
Interesting and Inspirational Quotes -
"That wasn't very smart. It's not the first time (Woods) has been motivated by something someone said to the press. That probably wasn't the most clever thing. Any motivation for 18 holes can help."
"Walking up 15, I wasn't very happy with the way it all sat. I didn't think I had any chance, but I didn't give up. I thought even if I birdied the last four holes, I'm not going to do it."
"It's irrelevant. He can drive it anywhere he wants. He does and he wins. As wayward as Stephen Ames thinks he hits it, it doesn't seem to bother him."
